Did some more cutting out at a friend's property. So far ive pulled about 5 cord of white and live oak and already split and stacked. Its 400 acres of a woodcutter's dream. Pulled two pickup and trailer loads today, after cutting. Only thing is its about 50 miles round trip, takes a bit of time. Ive done about three weekends of work out there, and as long as its not too wet/muddy, i can continue cutting. There is so many dead and down oaks there i will never finish! image.jpg

Looks like a good spot. 50 round trip isn't too bad, just need to make the loads count, and it looks like you have the truck to do it.

Yeah i wish it was a f250/350, but the old inline six does good. I have a old 70s toyota pickup bed trailer i pull. I haul about a cord at a time. Much more and the brakes, steering, etc aren't up for it. If it was a few miles might be different, but on the interstate i keep it to reasonable loads. I thought abou strictly cutting all weekend and sending the wife to load up all week, but too many things to go wrong!

Well..what could possibly go wrong. Yea I wouldn't do that either with my wife. But you could cut and stage the wood for a quick pick after work. Those inline sixes are a good for the slow n steady race. I had a 92 with it and worked the snot out of that truck.

I've done 50 miles before for wood, and I'd do it again for good wood, especially Oak.

The great thing is it is a nice straight shot, and the gal is so happy to have someone reliable show up. She is really laid back, as in "there's a tree....just cut down the ones in the way. Pull your truck back there. If you get stuck, ill get the tractor." I love it. Also some hunting opportunity should i want to. For now, it's getting some more of that OAK.

Looks like live oak is more btus than white oak. I dont usually seperate it, unless someone really wants one and wants to pay for it. Live oak sucks to split by hand. White oak rounds split like butter with an axe. Live oak gave me a heck of a time.

It's higher btu's than white or red oak. IIRC, live oak is the highest BTU oak. Something's telling me it's nearly 30 mbtu's a cord compared to 24 of red or white oak.

NorCal people are pretty laid-back. Is there any eucalyptus or madrone around there? Those are 2 more high btu trees in norcal.

I was going to write that you get bonus points if that truck has the big 6!
50 miles round trip isn't that far to a lot of us.

Nope. I hate processing the Euks, so if there were any I don't want them. No madrone ive seen. I think it's mostly higher elevations at least around here. Mostly oaks and some digger pine and manzanita in there as well.

Manzanita is great too, provided it gets big enough to bother with.

My wife's from the bay area, and she went to school at Butte tech and Humboldt State. I've spent a bit of time up on NorCal too.

Yep, my wood lot is 34 miles round trip, and I make every trip count as much as possible.

Ahh, the 4.9 straight 6. Is that stick or auto, e4od or AOD?

Its a 5spd with manual transfer case. I will start a seperate build thread, i have most the parts for a turbo setup, but was hoping to have a backup zf tranny or at least the stocker mazda 5spd to swap it when it grenades. Guys are making a ton of power with turbo 300. Like 15psi= 575 ft lbs. 300hp. All under 3k.
