Tractor Clutch Replacement

    Been having issues with the old Ford yard wood unit and had to break down and take it to the shop for a pro to solve the issues. For over a year it's been giving a nasty grind when placed onto gear and it made me cringe every time. I knew it wasn't good, and I tried making some external adjustments but had no luck.

    I'm very particular about what shop I use and I lucked out and found an honest shop 45 minutes away from home. Today they called me and wanted me to come see it apart. Not very often do you find a shop that takes the time to call you, bring you back in the shop and explain exactly what's wrong and why. Seems like these days the service manager wants to keep you as far away from the shop as possible and provide few details.

    The unit unfortunately has sat outside most of its life and the clutch has suffered from severe rust. We had it freeze up from rust once before from sitting but this time the mechanic said it looked almost like it was submerged. There is a weep hole that was not plugged in the clutch housing but it didn't help. Personally I think it was a simple case of being stored outdoors and not being used enough.

    The price tag on the repairs is hefty but we'll worth it. This unit has need a godsend.

    Yep, seen a few like that over the years, I think you're right about not enough use. Humidity & temp changes take a toll on that stuff. Try storing it with the clutch pedal depressed when it's gonna sit for a length of time, it really does help. Great tractors to have around. Sounds like you have an exceptional dealer, good for you!

    I had to change my clutch on my David Brown about ten years ago because of the grinding too.
    Did it on a weekend on the gravel driveway and don't want to do it again.
    Big job. $1,200 CDN for the clutch and pressure plate. Still works good now.

    990 and 1210 you dont have to split to change clutch just take off top of transmission and pull the pto shaft ive done a couple of them

    Always a fun project to split one! Unfortunately usually the only way to remedy clutch troubles except in a few circumstances. She’ll be good as new now! :tractor:

    Look by the clutch pedal there may be a hook by it. That is for the storage position. You push the clutch pedal down and hook it there so the clutch disk will not rust to the flywheel and it relieves the pressure from the pressure plate. It is a good idea to check the drain in the clutch housing every time you service the tractor, a few times a years, or if you have been in deep snow or water. I think the rust is probably from the drain being stopped up. I was at the Mahindra dealer a few years ago and the had a Mahindra that was a few months old and the clutch had rusted to the flywheel. When the tore it down the input shaft, clutch housing, and flywheel were all very rusty. They found that there was not a drain in the housing. They were waiting for Mahindra to get back to them on how they wanted them to fix it.

    you should block up clutch when sitting
    pic is from 1920 operators manual
    I don't have the block that came with tractor
    a 2x3 or small chunk of firewood will do

    Mike, the 1920 is a great unit isn't it? Seems like a 40hp tractor to me!

    The clutch pedal has been religiously blocked ever since we rusted one together 15 years ago from sitting without a block in. Heck, I don't let it sit overnight without the block in place. After every use, I soup can the muffler, block the clutch, and flip up the seat. Otherwise, the old boy sits outside.

    That's why this came as a suprise of how rusty and froze up it was. I am making provisions to store it in the connex box for now on and keep it out of the rain!

    I have been trying to keep myself away from the dealer salesman because I am very attracted to the new Kubota L3901 HST unit. I have to keep telling myself that a 4x4 1920 with FEL and backhoe AND a 4x4 1710 is all I'll ever need and save the 30k.

    An Orange tractor sure would sit nice with my Sthil's, my KTM dirtbike, and my Scag tigercub tho......

    Mine sat outside for a few years till I built a shed for it.
    I love this tractor it's a workhorse. Like having a work crew all the time.

    Changed the loader arms and bucket to quick attach, got forks and use it to manage all my split wood.
    Best thing I ever did!

    Born2Burn you should drill out the weep hole making it larger. They were supposed to have a cotter pin in them to spin and keep the hole open.

    Got the unit back a few weeks ago and finally got a chance to head out and run it. Feels like brand new.

    Busy day back in the wood lot
