And that’s about as much as you wanna split huh?? Ive never split it but I get the tough as hell spruce that grows in housing communities. So full of branches so nothing is straight except for the first 5 feet of bottom trunk if that! Ugh feels like a tree that sucked up glue cement and rocks!!

I have done a bunch of Spruce as well, I know what you mean tough as hell and and the hundreds of branches. The Elm is tough but the 25 ton hydro goes through it. I'll cut, split and burn all I can get, and I get quite a bit. It burns good and makes good coals. I split elm by hand for decades. I let it sit and pre-rot before axe splitting then.

I thought some kind of oak at first, but same as you, not any that I have seen before. It does smell nasty, but not like the red oak I’ve split before.

I don’t miss using a hydro on elm. What a pain. Pulling it apart is a whole other workout. Never had the “luck” of having to do it by hand! The kinetic makes a nice, clean slice.

Love those strings. They catch immediately in the stove. No kindling needed!

Siberian elm smells like no Oak, and you’re right to call this mystery wood “nasty smelling!”
Them barkless pieces, the internal color of the splits, the stank, all screams Elm to me....
Burn it when it dries down to appropriate MC......:stack:

If I had cut that wood here in Iowa (and I did cut a little of it last week) it would be Black Walnut.
No way that is Bur Oak, been cutting it for 40 years.

Got it all split and stacked last weekend. I stacked with some red oak. I figured whatever it was it would be dry by the time the oak was.
