I have been using powerbelt 285?? grain sabots through my Omega 50 cal since new. My luck/experience has not been good. I was using pyrodex 50 gr disks for powder, but had issues with misfires and just poor performance. I now use the Shokey powder sticks. I have heard some guys complain about the powerbelt slugs in the past. I need to get new slugs and am hoping for some feedback from the crew here as to other options and experiences. Thanks
I also have an omega 50. Those powerbelts are absolute junk imo. Terrible accuracy and just ok terminal performance. I tested a gazillion different bullets and for me, hands down, the best accuracy and terminal performance on deer was the barnes expander mz 250gr with 100gr 777 pellets. They are expensive, but well worth it imho.
I shoot an omega and use 250 grain t/c shockwaves and Shockey gold powder with great results. Sent from my SM-S320VL using Tapatalk
pour my own, use 2f black powder( tried a lot of those others always ignition problems even with a 209 primer), Knight inline- one of the first models to hit market years ago.
I have a T/C omega as well, I had been using 275gr maxi-ball with 100gr white hot pellets. Good grouping using open sights. Most of my shooting was 50-75yrds where I hunted. They all dropped where they stood or pretty close to it. They're fairly cheap or they were, I haven't hunted in a bit.
Always wanted one of those 45/70 muzzle loading rifles ( paper cartridges) but they do not quite fit the rules here.
My local guy has the new split T-ez sabots. From the limited research I have done, they are a good mate to the tight barreled Omega. Hope to shoot them Friday. Will post results
Powerbelts are great, until they dont work on an animal, and I know it all to well. 250gr Barnes MZ's are the answer, devestating. As for powder, im lazy and still use pellets. I use white hots, 100gr.
I picked up the Hornady Split EZ sabots and hit the range. I needed to sight in both Omegas to the new setup. Didn't look for groups, just got them 2 inches high at 50 yards. Used the last 2 Powerbelts to dirty the barrels. 6 Shots total and down the road I went. Most likely won't see a shot over 50 yards when I get into the Maine woods anyway.
I have a simple traditions inline 209. I use 777 pellets. Only mis fires is when I leave it loaded years. I shoot powerboat like 250 ish grains with 100gn powder. Accuracy is adequate to me at 100. I have never killed a deer with it.
