I didn't want to derail the How many miles ya got thread so I'm starting this one. That thread is beginning to drift into the "new car" or "not" arena and it got me wondering. Are there any of us here that have never purchased a brand new vehicle? Me? I have not. Even when I got to the financial position where I was able, I could not bring myself to buying a new car and have it devalued by 10%-20% or more just for driving it off the lot. I have 2 that are tied for the newest I ever owned. One is my '94 Ram 2500 that I bought in '98. Still have it. The other was an '82 Buick Regal I bought in '86. Sold it in '93. Right now my everyday driver is an '03 Camry with 132,xxx miles. I bought it back in May for $2400 to replace my '96 Camry with 270,xxx miles. Sold the '96 for $800. So, who else has never bought a brand new, fresh off the dealer lot, car or truck?
I have never bought a new car. I'm getting very close to doing so though. I don't like to take the depreciation myself, but I owe it to myself to get a new vehicle.
me I have never bought a new vehicle.. closest was 4 years old.. as my car is pushing 18 years old I may have to upgrade and really REALLY want a truck... new truck prices here almost make more sense than used.. example saw a dodge quad cab 2009 165000 miles hemI gas wants 18k for it and I was like too much it sold 6 hours later.. still, looking
I've had a four brandy new, my last new truck Toyota bought back after 13 years. Was still like new except for one little tiny parking lot ding in the passenger door, one new windshield and a rusted rotten frame. I've had a few beaters and a few used cream puffs in between. Never bought something I couldn't afford. So I've had some pretty basic transport.
I've owned 6 vehicles (7 If you count the bike) and none were new. I could afford a new one but refuse to pay that much. Instead, I'll pay my house off before I'm 40. Used truck prices are crazy. Trucks with 200k on them are still listed for a boatload of money.
I've bought 3 new work trucks everything else has been used, an older farmer taught me "if used is more than 60% cost new, buy new" I'm looking for a truck now but prices are stupid around here. I bought a 09 dodge diesel during the recession because the rebates made it cheaper than used, those same trucks with 150,000+ miles are selling for more than I paid new!!!
Crazy used truck prices are the reason I bought my last 2 trucks new. I looked at a 2011 truck that was identical to the 2015 I bought new. The used truck was 75% of the cost of the new one-and it had 50,000 miles on it. I have bought 4 new trucks in my life-a 1989, a1996, a 2004 and a 2015. Only 1 new car-a 2014. That will be kept for many years. Will
Nothing at all wrong with buying new if you plan on keeping it til the cops take it off the road. If you live in the north and get it oiled every year you'll get your moneys worth and then some. The Silverado I'm driving now was leased new in '01 by the wife and I bought the remainder of the lease in '04 and still have many years left in it. It's not a rust bucket yet and the sills are still good. I saw one small hole in the frame right by where the drivers feet would be and intend on welding some heavy steel in there next summer. No holes in the body and very little rust.
Ive never bought a new vehicle. I once bought a 2 year old car not long after I graduated college. I began regretting it within six months. My father has been in the car business all my life, and he always said the biggest mistake college grads make is going out and buying a newer car. And he’s the one who sold me the darn thing! Go Figure! I’ve been looking at used trucks for the last year and just can’t pull the trigger. You guys are right; the prices are crazy. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Never bought new. My dad bought a new tacoma in 09 ish and it was not much more than used. He sold it for 3k less than he paid for it 3years later with 40k on it. Ill be darned. I myself pay cash for everything. Had a few year old kia on payments with the first wife. It worked out, but wouldn't do it again. Its always funny talking to the guys at work who can afford 150-200$ payments but couldn't put away 50-100$ a month to save for a new car in the years leading up to their jalopies demise. To each their own. I usually look for something that needs an engine or tranny and use that to get a good deal and upgrade/replace at the same time.
I've done it twice, lease in 1999 (lemon, parked it early at 62K miles before mileage after being stranded too many times all under 75K miles, which was my extended mileage package), then bought a good one in 2007. The latter would have been a decent deal, but I went from 150 miles/day to 150 miles/month suddenly, so I sold it. The old Blazer however, has always been the mainstay for us while other vehicles came and went.
The wife gets the new ones, I get the leftovers. I'm OK with that. My current leftover is the '06 Cobalt. 248K and still going strong. My next will be the '13 CRV, already 120K but I'll squeeze a few more out of it when it's mine. Then there's the '83 K-30 and '73 CJ-6. Doubt they have 150K between the two of them. Those are mine, all mine, muahahaha!
I have bought 2 new & 1 used trucks. The newest is 15 years old now. The Mrs has always bought used. Her current car is a grand marquee had 40k miles for less than 5 grand.
