What poplar do you guys have? We have tulip poplar and it looks completely different but it's just called "poplar" around here.
We've got Quaking Aspen. We just call it all poplar. We may have other poplars though. Edit, we do have balsam poplar, and bigtooth Aspen too. I just lump it all together, as poplar.
First pic of splits looks a bit like some of the Red Maple I've cut, but also Poplar. Bark looks Poplar-ish........young tree or branch wood.
I am thinking either yellow or tulip poplar. I have a few tree to take down of this stuff and I don't mess with poplar much if in fact that is what it is. New farm, new farmer so I will cut it to get to the better stuff I guess. I can either try it for shoulder season, fire pit or give it to someone that is in need.
Never had redbud that I know of, at least not the tree kind....lol. All the web pics don't match as the base bark is pretty rough.
I was about to ask what you were talking about, then it hit me that some people had more fun than me growing up... The bark on redbud varies quite a bit. I gave up on Google images long ago trying to id bark. I looked up balsam poplar and it does look similar. We don't have that here or any of those Aspen varieties
Does not look anything like the red bud we have around here. Previous owner planted 9287 of the darn things!!!! Okay maybe a slight exaggeration but between them and the eastern red cedar he planted I'm still trying to clean the place up. And I can't forget the Formosa trees!! I wind up mowing more tree sprouts than grass sometimes. Our redbud has a much looser bark that peels/flakes off.
I hope you don't just trash them...redbud is really good firewood. Ours vary like that too... Some looser bark than others. I saw one today growing alone in a small open field and the bark was tight with almost no splitting or flaking. Still had a few leaves on it and the seed pods. What's Formosa? Do you mean Mimosa/silk tree? I'm taking one of those down this winter... Only one on the property but it's dropping pods everywhere around the house and I'm finally tired of it.
Formosa or Mimosa same tree good BTU slow drying for me 18-24 months very fast growing but very brittle green and dry. Resprouts like crazy from the trunk and roots can be very invasive from those seed pods. The redbud everything smaller than ~3" got burned on the brush piles.
Good info, I've never burned one before and was wondering about it. They don't match the landscape around here at all and I don't understand why anyone would want to willingly plant them. I have no clue how this one found it's way into my yard... only one around on 150 acres and it's got to be right by the house.
