How often do you really deal with trees this size?

Not very often, but it we be awesome to have a machine like that when you do! Never seen one like that before. Looks like it would make quick work of some "smaller" rounds!

I deal stuff that big when the village north of me cuts treelawn trees. That would be pretty nice to have. I use large tongs on the front end loader to position them into the vertical splitter. Slow, but effective.

    Slicker than snot!

And I was thinking how could a person load multiple smaller rounds and have a continuous feed so you never had to stop.

Those types would make a lot of splitter trash, but if you were burning 10 chords a year they would be really nice to have

For sure very, very few people would need anything like that. Yes, it is neat watching some of the big equipment work but logically, it just would not pay for one person to own if putting up wood for just himself...unless he also had a business that he heated so that it took a tremendous amount of wood to get through the heating season. I think the average homeowner is closer to 3-5 cord of wood so it just would not make sense to have that much money tied up on machinery.

In addition, the Tempest video really points out why I am against horizontal splitting. Look closely as he works and you realize it is a tremendous amount of muscle and work he has to put into what he is doing. Why have a big machine to do that work then also have to work hard to make it work? Doesn't make sense to me. We buy machines to save work, or most of us do anyway.

EDIT: Sorry. Don't mean to be a spoil sport.

I've got 2 ash, 2 red oak and one white oak log that size right now. I sure could use that machine. I can't roll the rounds like the guy in the video, I have to move them with the loader on my tractor. Then I have to noodle or split them with 4 wedges and a sledge just to get them on the splitter.

I get one or two of those monsters a year here too. Usually Hard Maple or Oak. I swear I'll never do another, but they always show up. I love that splitter!

I think the biggest tree I've ever come across here in Alberta may have had a 24" diameter. There may have been old growth stuff here at one time, but I've never come across anything even remotely that big. Most of my rounds come from lodgepole pine and rarely get to be more than 18" across.

    Quite the splitter!

I bet Mr. Abe Lincoln would've liked to see something like that way back when....

Only thing is, Backwoods Savage is gonna have to figure out a way to configure it vertically!
