That's todays project... I'm using some Dura-vent instead of the Selkirk I used 13 years ago. It's a 4" vent straight out the wall instead of the Selkirk which is 8"-10" that has the built-in outside air intake. Just a little less obtrusive and more pleasing to the eye. I can't complain about the Selkirk... never a problem with any leaks but I have the Dura-vent in stock (left over from the purchase of a used Hastings I owned several years ago). I only need to buy on 12" section of straight vent to make it work... I think. Film at 11...
Got the hole bored in the wall and both sides of the thimble installed... now where to put the OAK? I'm thinking around the corner on the north facing wall... the vent now points east. Lower than the new vent? Same height? Your thoughts?
IIRC, OAK should go on side of prevailing wind if possible (which is probably north). OAK Should be a little lower than exhaust.
AFAIK, it's supposed to be on the opposite side.....you don't want high (pressure) winds blowing into the OAK. Mine was on the east-facing side, and seemed fine.
So I checked my P61 manual, and it says prevailing wind side: FWIIW Both of my stoves have the OAK's to the prevailing wind (as is exhaust) and I've never had any issues, The manual also says it is best if OAK and exhaust are on the same wall.
We have a working stove out of start up and the boss is cleaning the widows so I can insert my interior storms. I have had my walk and put a covered plastic pail on the back porch for the compost pile runs. Now to get one of the storms upstairs I got two up there earlier. That will cover the master bedroom. ETA: Krooser where were you hiding, good to see you.
Smoky... I've been keeping on the down low trying to avoid imacman... Now I have to replace that siding under that big white 'patch' where the stove used to be. I also had it in our kitchen porch when we first installed it during the winter of '96/'97... it heated the kitchen way too much... caused a big ice dam on the roof where we don't have enough ventilation in that small area so we moved it to the LR. Now my son is complaining that he had to turn on his electric heat because I don't have the stove working right now... he lives upstairs with his family. I'm working a few days this week so I'll likely do the OAK this weekend. The prevailing wind in on the north side of the house so I may install it there.
Picking where to install any part of a vent system can be a problem, the vent and OAK s/b on the same side so the pressure difference is somewhat canceled out as for the system to be on the prevailing wind side leaves me cold. Don't get mad if the house siding gets discolored that way. As for Imacman it is just unavoidable.
