So I acquired a huge ( to me in the uk tree ) Nice day so gets splitter out but some of its splitting funny sound the center rings, it's not squishy but has a white colour and has the smell of puke It's not going in my piles but would you say it's punky ?
It is not the best wood for sure but not because of punk. There is no reason to throw that wood out now that you've split it and there certainly is no reason to not put into your stacks. That white stuff is nothing to be concerned with. Methinks you are perhaps over-thinking this a bit. Just let it dry and burn it...in the stove.
It's the beginnings of deterioration. Similar to spalting . In oak it can be a huge white cheese-like growth that smells really, really bad. But the process stops when the wood dries out. Just stack it, it won't spread or ruin the good wood and will still burn decent as long as it still splits. Bad would be if the process was so far along it just crumbled when you tried to split it. At that point it may as well be left on the ground to continue becoming dirt.
Two bits that bad , iv strayed a heap in my front garden . Bugs will love it and in turn the birds and hedgehogs will live them . Everyone wins
Recon iv split over a cubic meter and barely started, considering my 5 kw fire has been going since 10 am ( now almost 6 pm ) and it's only had 12 pieces in it . Top that with we're all melting , I'm hoping for a cold winter in the uk
I run into some wood that is punky on the inside, but OK in the outside. Is it a problem to burn it if some of the punk is still stuck to the good wood? Of course as long as it's dry.
I'm actually burning some from last year it's almost like burning paper but hot for a few minutes then glows , I just stick a decent piece on top of it
No problem at all - those pieces are good to start a fire with, as the punky bits light off quickly when they're dry.
