My wood cutting companion is my wife. The rest I do by my self, but we both enjoy the heat and we both appreciate it.
Wow. I really feel fortunate. As a kid I learned quickly that more hands meant fast work and far less individual effort. The group was all family back then. Now I have a tight circle of buddies who really like getting together and helping each other get stocked up. Usually we are trying to overstock each other instead of being greedy. It's been a great time. Gotta admit however. My wife helps with the largest portion of splitting and stacking. Can't beat it. Poor girl!
I’ve got a couple guys I can call on occasion, but I do most myself. My 11 year old starting helping out 2 years ago. He brings wood to the house and will help stack on occasion. He really likes to split by hand. I think it makes him feel good to pop open a piece of wood. He only weighs about 65 pounds; I give him the smaller stuff and he uses the Fiskars x27. Do we have any firewood buddies? Yes indeed! We have many and love every one of them. These pictures were taken at our place (first 3) and also at DexterDay's, walt's and at Shawn Curry's place. During the winter months I usually cut alone but not always. My wife used to almost always help but don't get much from her now but it is okay. Also last winter, or spring, Barcroftb came one day to help out. Pallet Pete has also showed up a few times as has amateur cutter and perhaps a couple others that don't come to my mind right away. I plead age with the memory problems. But again, all these people have been super great. It's also really nice having TurboDiesel with his beautiful camper parked here in the driveway and used as a backstop for our GTG's. One can also see BrianK's rocket stove in the second picture. I included this even though we did not get to sample a pizza made in it... Also the last picture is of Shawn Curry and your's truly passing off the FHC sign.
I now carry a phone, take pics & post my woodcutting adventures , near real-time, here to share with my buddies. I enjoy the alone time in the woods & embrace the challenges doing the work myself. Not that help wouldn’t be nice, but being retired I consider it one of my more enjoyable alone jobs. ..Ever evolving with various obstacles to overcome keeps me learning & active. The awesome feedback I get definitely adds motivation & that’s my good “woodcutting buddies “
My boys 9 and 7 good help for there age. They may enjoy playing in the woods more than helping dad. The fact they want to go means a lot. This is lunch time, we are making a little mountain house. My two girls help help once were home, always happy to get any help. As said before, I enjoy my time cutting wood.
I was planning on cutting wood with my dad, my brother and my two youngest kids this fall and winter. Dad is retired so has all the time in the world to collect firewood, thus he's already done. My brother isn't motivated. The kids are getting to be good helpers (ages 11 and 13) to the point where either of them will run the log splitter and stack wood. My son is 13 and I will probably have him running the saw in a year or two. I really have no close friends who burn wood, so it's usually me alone, with the tractor and saws.
When younger I used to get lots of help from a couple friends. Less and less over the years as they got busier and busier with family rearing and work. Almost 100% solo nowadays. Every once in a while one of the former helpers gets an itch to run his saw and he'll come help saw up some wood. I am fairly big on self sufficiency, but do miss the camaraderie sometimes. I work slower than I used to...firstly age is starting to slow me, secondly I have to be careful because if I have an accident, it could be quite a while before I'm found.
My wife is the best helper. No buddies here burn wood or care to sell it like me. My dad has helped before but doesn't care for it and has no interest. My boys help, but are 8, 6, and 2. Like herding cats. I can get good work out of the older two, but sometimes they just want to play, and that's ok. Most the time i cut and split myself and wife helps load, unload and stack.
I used to cut with some friends, but they drifted away from wood burning. Now it's mostly with my wife, or alone.
Like several of you, I sleep with my closest and most important firewood buddy. My 10 year old helps some. Our stove will take chunks 28" long X 14" round, so a lot of our firewood is a bit heavy for him. We have several other firewood buddies that we partner with sometimes. I shouldn't and I don't always feel horn swoggled when working with them. But my problem is that when we divide the wood 50/50 and their half is cut down to 12 or 14" long and split down to 3" slivers, 85 percent or more of our day was spent on their half of the wood. Yea, I know, get over it. Some of you talk of cutting firewood wood with your fathers. That brings back a lot of fond memories.
A few of them. I cut with a good friend who is on here as well as a few not at FHC. Ill admit the new furnace is so efficient that ive been very lazy this last year and havnt cut much but now that winter is getting here I'll probably be gettimg together with a few of them and cutting more.
Just me and the Hounds, they're not much help, unless you count keepin the stacks squirrel free help!
