I had the top of a big pine break off and land on the edge of my yard, and I can see something in the woods that snapped in half about 20' up and is laying across the path in the conservation land. Too far to identify, but not pine. Red maple or some variety of oak most likely. I'll have to take a look and see if that one is within my skill level to process, it is still connected at the break.

Yeah, I thought the same thing but to my amazement, there is nothing I have seen worth taking for firewood. Lots and lots of smaller branches but not worth trying to use as firewood, more like chipper fodder. The larger stuff seems to have fallen in the road and crews have already cut it and taken it away. Most likely the cities and towns so it either went to landfills or a few folks may have taken it for their own use as firewood. But in the end, nothing around here for the common firewood picker, at least that I have seen.

Large one sitting on the wires a few blocks over. Most of the fallen trees have rot in them.

Got power back today at 12:30 thankfully. Daughters school was without power all week as well so we believe she will have school tomorrow.

BDF - if you want to hoard some wood take a ride towards my place hit Matteson Rd and Carpenter. There is wood to be had. There’s some big wood by the reservoir on RT 12 heading towards RT 102.

Never lost power but boy the trees are down all around us. We are on the border of Fairhaven and Mattapoiset and they lost power all over town. I have 5 big red oaks down or snapped in half. Wish some of you guys were close by you could have them. I have tons of dead standing oak and that's all I cut.

Funny thing is none of the dead standing came down only the live oaks as they still have their leaves on.

20171030_172603.jpg 20171030_172603.jpg 20171030_172603.jpg my son and I spent all day Monday clearing downed trees from streets, I didn't go more than a mile or two, but I managed to get 6 trailer loads of wood.
Now my arms are burning and cramping from all of the work.
If I didn't have this pesky full time job, I could fill my backyard with wood :)

Our power never even blinked, my only damage was one shingle off the parsonage roof, and all of my stack covers were blown off.

Just thought I would throw this one in:

I had a great- uncle, a gentleman born in the last century (before the 'last' century) who was pretty sharp and used to tell some amazing facts (not stories, and they were not long- winded, just cool things from way back when....). Anyway, born in 1898, of course he grew up burning wood and coal for heat and continued to heat his garage (a repair garage with many bays, not a house sized garage) with wood until the end of his life (1991). So about this recent storm and 'found' firewood: he once told me that when hurricane Carol rolled through, it flattened a local locust farm. He helped them clean up the debris and (cough, cough) got some wood out of it- four years worth, for all his out- buildings as well as his home. This was back in 1954, and he had a tractor with a saw- rig on it; if one has not seen such a thing, do take a moment and see if there is an old photo or video out there of one. It is a pivoting carriage mounted on the back of a tractor, powered by a capstan on the engine with a flat leather belt, driving a large (40"? 48"? I honestly do not know but it was a half- day job sharpening and setting the blade) rotary saw blade. One fills the "V" of the carriage and then tips it into the rotating saw; you can actually see each tooth where it passed through the wood. Truly an impressive thing and certainly something that would have OSHA running and screaming into the night...... Anyway, I cannot remember now but he ran that saw rig for days and days cutting downed locust after Carol. I can only imagine the woodpile it made.

My wife and I didn't sleep well because of the storm, si I tried to sleep in, but then I sat straight up in bed.
They had a tree come down in the domino's parking lot and I heard the saw going.
I ran over and they said I could have the wood, in fact when I got back, the guy running the saw asked me if I lived next to the church, he figured I was the one scrounging for wood :)
I think I'm getting a reputation around here
I kept hearing another saw going, I wonder if it was you.

Not such a bad thing. My neighbors will call when something drops in their yard. Most people don't want or know how to deal with large limbs.

We were lucky enough to only go 36 hours on the generator. Power came on as I walked in the door from work last night. Here is some pictures a girl I work with took Monday night.

I was almost caught up on my rounds pile.
I finished the big maple and a bunch of walnut, my neighbor was shaking his head at each trailer load

We did not fare too well. The storm rolled through Sunday Night and it is Wednesday and we still do not have power, nor will we for awhile. I live on top of a big hill, not far from the ocean and yet looking westerly to Mt Washington 150 miles away...yeah a big hill.

Our strongest gust lasted about 10 seconds and hit 80 mph. It blew two barn doors off, ripped the electric wire off the house to the pole, the telephone wire off from the house to the pole, the apple tree in the front yard, killed the power in all directions, and sent my trampolinesailing that I could not keep it from flying away and ended up parking the skidder on it to keep it anchored.

Today the electric and phone company came today, but while the rest of the street is lit up, having the wind rip the powerline down caused the transformer to blow to our home, so with individual houses not being hooked up until last, they are estimating maybe next week sometime. (It is wednesday as I type this).

Sadly I had to go to the Dr today and got all bad news:
    1) My recent surgery did cause an infection
    2) I have cancer

Then I drive home to find out we will be in the dark for awhile...

Got out a little more today. Saw lots of trees down. The towns around us here are still shut down, no school etc. Shelters are open so some can sleep there, get a warm meal, and take a shower. I don't know it that includes pets. Most folks I know have pets and will not leave them unattended.
That picture with the trees on the power line looked just like it was here on Rt 9 River road in Chelsea. Where were your pictures taken?
