Put the old Earth Stove in place and fired it up in the shop, the wife was worried about the cats getting cold. That thing is a wood hog but puts heat in the shop and a lot up the chimney. I'll probably let it burn out after tomorrow as it looks like warm weather is headed this way

Does it smoke for the entire burn or just when you start the fire

it acts like the draft is weak but its 6" straight up and goes into 2 wall insulated and exits about 4' above the roof crest. it burns wood so fast it must be drafting but it smokes out the door when i open it

bang I am using an Earth Stove insert and I find it works best to either open the draft fully or open the door slowly to keep smoke from coming into the house. As long as I keep a hot fire going, there is minimal smoke coming out of the chimney except at start up.

I bought it a few years ago and didn't realize it had been "redesigned". I'm pretty sure it was an insert and someone welded up the rear exit and cut and welded a 6" id steel pipe on top. It just occurred to me that all other Earth Stoves I've seen were 8" so this one may never work properly but it's the small version with 8 scallops.

Before you open the door , open the stovepipe damper and air control all the way, your sure going to get smoke if you don't
You do have a stovepipe damper on it right ?

Mine has a 7 inch collar. Ran it on a 6 inch and it did really well.
Do you have pictures to verify?

Yeah, opening the door slowly will defeat the vacuum type draft that opening the door creates...pulling smoke out with it, right?

What are you running for flue temps?

I don't have a thermometer on the flue but I can check with a gun. Fires are out now and I picked up a "new" tractor that I'm getting figured out serviced and generally playing with so I haven't got around to getting pics of the stove setup.

I've been slacking and waited until now to check out the Earth stove in the shop. I determined the rod in the damper was slipping causing the draft issue.
I tried to straighten the rod but it's still slipping so I'll get a new damper this afternoon.
The photo is what I think is a plate welded over a rear exhaust possibly for an insert, but the control in the rear makes that theory unlikely.
