My Brother-in-Law and I both cashed in a vacation day today, and got after some standing dead Ash on his property. He's been bugging me for months now to come out and fell the trees for him, but I've been busy getting my stove project wrapped up. Now it's finally feeling like fall, and my stove is fully operational, so I figured it was time. I dropped 3 trees out of a good dozen or more that need to come down, and had nowhere near enough room in the truck to fit the wood. Looks like I'll be making another trip real soon...he also had 5-6 Shagbark Hickories that he wants down since they're directly competing with some really nice White Oaks. All in all, it was a thoroughly enjoyable day spent harvesting, followed by some fantastic IPAs in the woods.
Indeed, indeed! Post-cutting beers in the woods was a nice treat as well; I'm usually rushing back to get everything unloaded, but tonight we had the family together at their place for a grill out (14 kids between our two families ), so it was a very leisurely pace. All around awesome day!
Is there any reason to spare the white oak and cut the shagbark hickory down? The hickory is a better firewood, but if I had a choice, I'd cut the oak down in a heartbeat and save the hickory. Nice haul, and it looks like you'll be set for a while.
In each of the cases, the Oak is a lot bigger than the adjacent Hickory. He IS saving a big Shagbark that's standing alone, and a good 24" DBH.
Let me see, save the hickory or save the white oak???? Sucks to be you. Not much of either around here.
