For those folks that don't have a walk out basement, how do you get your wood in? I recently picked up a kids slide that I plan to rig up to slide the wood down the stairs into a wheel barrow. I have seen bogydaves set up and I gave thought to pulling out a window and throwing the wood in there but the only one that would work is on the opposite side of the house. At the other house I tried to make a slide out of 2x6 but the wood kept piling up at the bottom. In the end I'll probably keep bringing armloads down the steps as that's been the tried and true method.
I carry it down the bulkhead steps. But only enough wood for a few days at a time. Back when we stacked a cord or so in the basement, we used an old solid door, laid on the steps, for a chute. It was a two person operation, one to stack and one to dump. I don't imagine your wife much feels like bending at the waist now! If you need a helper for a day, give a yell!
I built a slide out of plywood with 2x4s for sides and set it through a small window. The splits just fall to the ground then I stack it. I load about 5 cords down that way this time of year.
My basement winter stacks area has a garage door (walkout) so just back the truck into there. No chute. I like your chair by the stove for observation purposes.
Having an OWB, I relieved myself of all such problems! So what do I do? Install a "kicker stove" in the basement! I don't burn all that much in it, so I just carry it down by the armful. BTW, nice pic!
The pic is from last year. I'm embarrassed at my readiness for this year. Had a few projects around the house that dominated my time this summer what was left was spent with the family.
Thanks again for the offer. Wifey has helped some in the past but it's mostly a one man show. As an auto mechanic people always have emergencys that requires me and my time perhaps instead of charging money I should ask for their labor.
Yup, sitting on that chair is about the only quiet me time I get. There is a beer fridge right around the corner too!
When my granparents were still burning they would buy a few cord and get the kids and grand kids together and we would do the firemans muster with the wood I have 6 sets of aunts and uncles over 20 cuousins it didn't take long to get it put up.
I don't have a basement burner but did store wood down there for a couple years. Bulkhead with 2x6 ramps and one of those wood carts on 2 wheels. It worked but got a little scary on the slippery days.
Nice picture! That's a lot of wood you have down there already.... Lots of armfuls. I think there has to be a better way. You'll figure it out.
One help may be to lift the end of the slide up as high as you can , give more wood at the bottom before it backs up I remember the mess it makes. Motivated me to cut the hole & make the chute
