Kokanee just makes it all worthwhile. Couple years ago the limits were so large, you had to off load your catch and come back as your possession limit was only for about 2-3 days if I remember correctly.

Washington has some good kokanee lakes? I know they are a native species from Alaska to California. Our limit out here is typically 15 per person per day with your total possession limit being twice the daily limit. Nothing better than smoked kokanee. They arent big but they are fun to catch on light gear. I like ice fishing for them late winter early spring. Sometimes they can be hard to catch around here even in lakes where they are prolific.

 

My subsistence salmon tag is good for 500 fish. Sucks being poor!

Yes they were that limit. I think because it was the height of the summer, I was going to at least be 3-4 hours from my house. The lake I cant remember what it was but it was part of the Chelan area. River I believe. Friend of mine was going to touch base but then the Carlson Complex fire was happening then and burned the town that was across the water from where we planned to stay. I’ll find out more in a bit.

True, some of my very favorite people are dogs. I like Golden Retriever people, German Shepherd Dog people.... well, the fact is I like almost all the dog type of people.

obviously you don't live where roads are snow covered 5 months of the year.. not trying to be rude or pick an argument but those white knuckled southerners driving 20 mph below limit are getting passed.. although a little more careful in 3500 dump with 9 foot plow but come on if ua can't drive it park it!

and yeah all season tires are for southerners ..
VT allows studded snows and encourages a good winter tire because we do not have a clear road policy! in fact it's considered normal for secondary roads to have snow and ice

the worst though is 4wd drivers who drive on worn out all seasons they go off road.. and then get a 175 dollar ticket for driving unsafe due to conditions

Here is a plate of kokanee minus heads lol. I couldnt find a picture of them as a whole at the moment. They are land locked sockeye and dont need flowing water to spawn although it helps. Around here a big one is around 14 inches long but often are 9-12 inches. When a Gerard rainbow trout is in a lake with kokanee the trout gets quite big from munching on kokanee. Where the ones in my picture below came from there have been rainbows caught up to 23 lbs although that is a rarity. BC anglers have a soft spot for these tasty little fish. The bears and birds like them as well!

 

True and not taking this as a jab. Its just often super wet snow that tends to fall then melt then it freezes up again sometimes too. Its like an ice rink. Not to mention that the cities around here were not built to have snow on them for long periods of time. Mostly rain anyways. But honestly if snow falls, melts slightly and then it chills again. Complete and utter chitshow. I don’t know anyone who is able to stop on ice without going 50 some feet at 30 mph. By no means do I drive Granny, just careful. But anyone who drives 50 on a road thats been snowed on here in WASHINGTON, either a ticket would be a good start. Heaven forbid someone has to even TRY to stop safely at that speed. I Know they are showing off. Its not even funny. People pull over to the side of the road slightly just so they can get rid of someone on their tail too. What happens? They get stuck because someone’s acting ‘cowboy’ on a 2 lane road that’s already busy with people trying to get home. I used to take trips out by the nearby mountain area just to check it out since I lived at sea level and could change that drastically by driving just a couple miles out. By then the car was abandoned to be retrieved when the snow melted enough. Its an entirely different climate.
I would love for it to get sticky snow here but it has to be in the mountains or Eastern WA. Having lived out in Ellensburg, this happened my first winter there. Cold often and snow was thick and temps would drop below teens. No snow melt. That was good control when I remember. No need for chains either.

Now those bows you speak of being 23 lbs. its nice to catch one that size but lunkers like that can often be mediocre table fare. typical of older fish. Its not a common thing for sure but stuffing that would be a better part for me rather than eat it. Even letting it go too... but its nice when you see them. Just knowing you can easily have a younger and tastier fish and possibly easier too make it worth it but like these Kokes, jeeze That’s just tasty stuff looking at it.
