Using white cedar for kindling here. 99 enjoys cutting it up, so have at it! I usually end up splitting it at least once or twice more though. She did a couple rounds last month.
Normally I have a nice neat stack of lodgepole pine kindling of different sizes to make the perfect top down fires but Ive been so darn busy with work over the last six months that my hoarding and prep for the winter have been poor (thats not to say I dont have enough wood for the winter ). Im happy to make hay while the sun shines but my wood ambitions have been off. Of course part of that had to do with the insane forest fire season. Im splitting kindling daily right now which is a pain. I have a half cord of doug fir in my yard to run through the splitter before I sit down and deal with kindling. If I wait a bit longer I wont need kindling for many months
Im sure you’ll do just fine Sean, we all do this walk our own way anyways. In time it’s bound to get done out of habit eventually. Im just glad you’re out of the danger as far as wild fires go. Hoping the rains have brought enough to your area and you’re just about to hunker down soon for the winter and won’t need so much kindling, just big splits. I was just grateful for some time and remembering what I was gonna do with my stuff so had some time to take off my hands. Worked out fine and fairly clean job.
He ran out of trash bags so he started wrapping bundles in plastic wrap. I told him I would take the bag and he should sell the bundles but he said the 5 bucks wasn't worth it.
This was from last fall. Have not got to it yet this season it's been so warm but soon. Eastern White Pine for kindling. New house gets way to warm so new fire every afternoon into the evening . Then repeat.
Sometimes I think there are keyboard cowboys out there.I am sure some stoker boilers seldom go out, but 1 match all winter? Seems far fetched to me. Coal goes out sometimes too.
Same here a piece or two of old cedar utility pole top well seasoned since the mid 1930’s. Usually don’t use a whole lot though I’ve been using the little pressed square firestarters seems to almost eliminate the need for kindling.
I guess that would concern how well someone checks on their coal? Plus the quality would likely have a lot to do with it too as some would have to get the clinkers out before they get to burning more of that.
5 bucks??? Man I feel Like I got gypped but oh well. Its hardwood so here its kind of coveted as the kindling is often short lived so Im ok with what I got anyways. Serves a purpose nonetheless
It's this. I picked it up at a yard sale about 10 years ago for $10. The top left drawer is the Super Ceders, top right is saw chains, bottom right is 2 cycle oil, bottom left is felling wedges and gloves. Tool box and some other stuff on top.
