Ya too much snow in the woods over here right now to bother with also. Giz looks like a little Emma on her seat :D

They had the 500 and the 450 side by side in the showroom and they were the exact same but they wanted $1700 more for the 500 as it had power steering  ;)

Same year as yours Stinny and except for a few incidents cause of the owner its been a great bike.

With tires on, I wouldn't be able to tell it had power steering (whatever that is on an ATV)... with tracks on, it steers really hard, so... I'd say you made the right choice on saving that $1700!

Yup, I'll bet Emma looked a lot like Giz when she was a pup. Giz would fit in a coffee cup when she was 6 weeks.

Stinny, please remember in the future that ash is perhaps the worst type of tree for barber chair. That is because it splits so easy. So please, if it is an ash and a leaner, beware! That tree was a small one and you got away with it but take it as a lesson.

Appreciate it Sav… I'll pay attention. When we were at our farm in 1994, the only wood I was going to have that winter was going to be ash. Our fields had ash all around it and I cut 7-8 cords, CSS by the end of August, and burned it all that winter. Wasn't great, but it got the job done. I don't remember any surprises with any of the ash. Lucky.

How does red oak split during the cut, with some type of "groove" all the way up 30' of a 70' tree? Not deep, but I've got a few like that and the woodpeckers love it. Wondered if the peckerheaded birds have bean beating on those oaks for years? Anyway, what are your thoughts on barber chair splits on the red oaks? Took 2 last year here.

They will barber chair but I've never had one do it. Come to think of it, I've seen perhaps 2 total in all the years. The ones you have to watch is those that grow in groups of 3 as at least 2 of them will be leaners.

This is timely for me anyway. I've got enough of these exact types of cuts to need some input from more experienced guys. Sav, Fly, and anyone else whose done a lot of the possible "barber chair" hazard cutting… Ideas on rope lines, escape ideas, etc. too. I'm always interested in new ideas on this kind of stuff. Them trees is heavy doncha know…

One more little bitty hint. Whenever you cut into a tree, don't forget to watch the sawdust too. That will tell you quickly about a hollow tree! Beware!

Well, 2 of the red oaks have plenty to worry about. Centers are not good. How would you attack trees like this? They need to come down.

I advise that you have not had experience with this so leave it to Mother Nature. You won't be sorry you waited. It really can not be taught over the Internet with words or even pictures and that is why I refrain. I just fear someone could get hurt badly and we do not want that.

I'd probably say the same… I understand. Thanks.
