Kinda looks like sweet gum to me, the bouncing maul will tell that.

I'm afraid to try. One piece that's split looks like it ain't gonna split clean and easy. I'll go out and take a pic.

I'm really hoping you're right about the Red Maple.

Being it is probably frozen, will I still be able to tell by whacking it?

If it will split good dry it should split good frozen, about all the red oak I split this year was frozen and actually split better.

I'd go with a maple....not sure of which type, but bark looks to be of that variety.

I see what looks to be cottonwood or possibly Rock oak (chestnut oak) in that pile too......

I don't know what the heck it is, but the bark has varied colors in it that just aren't picked up in the pic. This was the majority of what they cut down and trimmed.

Not lace bark elm. The underside of the bark would have a "leather" feel.

Probably Elm or sweet gum then, A hydro will split it but it makes some ugly pieces. kinda more tears it apart than it splits. If all ya got is a maul, then I would use it for an outside bonfire one night.lol

Now I've got to get a bigger splitter. My 5 ton electric could never get through Elm. This free score is gonna costs me. How unlucky can a lucky score get?  It's just my luck, too.
