I found an old 051AV (runs) with a 25" bar for $100 cdn on my local buy and sell site. She needs some love...there's no doubt about that, but over all, it's not in THAT bad of shape. I've read where you can convert the 051 (89CC) to an 076 (111cc) by swapping out the cylinder and piston. I found a place on the net that has brand new cylinder/piston kits for them for $88 plus shipping. Anybody here ever do the conversion ? Any problems/tips you can share would be greatly appreciated. Why do I want to do this ? If I'm going to rebuild this saw and bring it back to life, why wouldn't a guy want an extra 22cc of power if he was changing out the cylinder and piston anyway, right ?
I'm not sure you can . besides , why mess up a good 051. 075s had Lots of snort and were truly great saws. But so were the 051AV . The 051 would run and run and run on a tank of gas and oil. Less time fueling ment more time in the cut. Plus the 51 had Enough power. They would live a Long life with a 36" bar pulling full skip chisel ground 404 . Oregon 52 AJ with 40 k joint. They would just keep pulling. I don't remember ever owning an 051. But have cut with a few of them . I liked them . I hope you have a Big bottle of Red , # 271 LocTite . you will need it . Don't be surprised if you take out a case bolt or machine screw and find something that looks like thread in the hole or wrapped around the screw. Good button thread was the fore runner of loc tite. The 075 was a great saw. But unless you need 111 ccs . Why. The maincase gasket on those saws had a habit of giving out between the crank case and the oil tank.
Yes...I see where youre coming from. I fired it up tonight...first pull. Rev it a few times and you sure know youre not holding onto a department store grade saw. I need to fix the chain oiler...I suspect the worm gear is worn out. I also need to replace the grab bar rubber bushings. Theyre pretty much pooched. Hopefully I can still buy them. If not, Ive dabbled in 2 part polymer resin casting, so I can probably make something that will work. Other than that, she seems pretty solid.
Yes blacksmithden to the best of my knowledge all of the 051, 075, 076 and 076 super parts are all interchangeable. These are the differences between them all that I know of. And I hope that someone corrects me if I am wrong because I surely don't want to lead you astray! The main difference between the 051 and the 075 and 076's is there is a manual oiler because longer bars were usually run on the 075 and 076's and they needed the extra oil. The difference between the 075 and the 076 is the 076 has a larger fuel tank than the 075. The difference between the 076 and the 076 super is that the super has a larger velocity stack on it to give it a little more boost. If the name plate is wrong one way that you can tell a super apart from a straight 076 is the air filter cover sits up a little higher. I don't blame you for wanting to give that saw a little more grunt. Heck the 051 and the 075 weight the same why not have the extra power if you have to lug all that weigh anyways! Good luck on your build what ever you decide to do. And if the parts you are taking off are in good shape by all means keep them you may need them at some point for a backup!
