Rain today so I worked on the bulldozer most of the day. Not that I wanted too.

The technical manual is hard to read, and I misread the port I was supposed to adjust on the transmission to get the shifting better. The poppet valve shot out, oil went everywhere, and Katie and I spent 3 hours trying to get the double sprung, deep bore, upside down, 2 feet inside the track poppet valve back in. I might have said numerous bad words regarding said John Deere engineer who designed this bulldozer.

But the worst part was, when I finally got it back in, and then got the right valve, it was a cinch. The plug came right out, the adjustable orifice backed right out, and in 5 minutes the shifting was optimum.

Suffering snot balls...really? A whole day lost for the wrong valve when the right one was 5 minutes? What a way to celebrate Indigenous People Day (Maine voted out Columbus Day last year).

Way to stick with it and get it done man. I know around here there are not many heavy equipment mechanics.

I may know that engineer.

One more reason to celebrate Leif Erikson Day.

Did Maine still keep no mail service, or banks open, or any government services on this hallowed day even after getting rid of Columbus day? I think I know the answer:zip:

The local turkey flock is always walking around this particular neighborhood. A little too comfortable. One of the neighbors puts feed out in their driveway.

    Rant alert:

First day back at work after a week off. Normally that sucks...but today the suck level was extra high.

Had a long talk with the boss. Sounds like I'm going to be asked to work on a project that is something I have no interest in, feel like the people asking for the project are somewhere between bat chit crazy or hopelessly stupid, has near zero chance of actually working let alone meeting any of their unreasonable expectations, and will require frequent international travel. There is also no carrot at the end of this stick...best case scenario nothing changes but in reality I'll eventually get fired...not if...when.

I haven't officially been given my marching orders and left it simply as "that's a lot to think about. Let's talk in more detail when things are final. "

I can handle the travel...but I'm not going to spend time a world away for a hopeless cause, working on something I don't enjoy for people I don't believe in.

I've already made up my mind the answer will be a firm but polite "I can't take that project" and we'll see where it goes from there. Maybe they'll do nothing and give it to someone else...maybe they'll fire me. Either is fine. I've sold enough of my soul to corporate America and I'm all out of f#@%s to give. The job market in my line of work is hot, I can do my job from anywhere with an airport and an internet connection, and ive saved my pennies so missing a few paychecks isn't a big deal.

lukem, I sure hope this works out for you. So many people don't understand the job market now. It truly is a job seekers market.
It also appears to be a time when employers are asking batchit crazy things from their current employees. You have to watch out for that too.

The problem around here is, there are few mechanics that know the older stuff. We have a guy in church that is a really good mechanic for the local Cat dealership, but when I asked him about adjusting the steering clutches in my dozer he said unless it has a computer hook up, he has no idea how to do it. He's not a bad mechanic, it is just that most of what dealership mechanics work on is new.

Me, I just keep a list of things my equipment needs and slowly plug away on it. It is a bulldozer so there is plenty left to do, and sometimes it seems things break faster then they are fixed, but it is in better shape now then when I started. I still have a ways to go before I am done though.
