The county was out clearing the shoulders today, and I came across a little Locust (I think), so I had to grab it on my way home from work...gnarly thorns!
That doesn't look like the honey locust we have here... I think you got something else but not sure if there is variance in the bark. Is that the type of thorns it had? Or did you knock the others off where those exposed areas are? Honey locust looks like this here:
Good Lord...that looks terrifying! No, there were just a few thorns, but the small, compound leaves of Locust for sure.
That looks like the thornless Honey Locust I cut a few years back...even the "thornless" varietys can have a few small thorns. Whatever that deviltree is that Moparguy posted would be on my "live and let live" list!
How about splitting one? The yellow green inside is a dead give away. If it was honey, I see people posting with a more orangish tinge.
Yes. I hauled some out of my neighbors across from me and the thorns were just comparable to those. They dug into my leather glove and made my finger swell the full width of the glove. I have to think that the thorns have either some slight poison to them or deterrent resin. Not fun to get jabbed at. But aside from the thorns, I hear its just about the best wood you can burn.
