I stopped by Tractor Supply today and they had a Jonserred forestry helmet; the box had been opened but tapped back. It had been reduced but was still $39.95 so I left it. It appeared to have the face mesh screen. I was thinking that if I got one it would have the clear plastic face shield so I could avoid wearing the safety glasses because they fog up or sweat up. I saw forestry helmets on ebay with the mesh screen for around $20.00.

So I thought I would ask about them on here.

I prefer the mesh screen as it won't scratch like the plastic. I have worn glasses and gone without and never had debris get through. Ask the manager about discounting the price, his answer may surprise you.

Ya I really like a good helmet. I am guessing it is the same as the cheaper husqvarna helmet. I have used it a fair bit and really like it. The mesh works really well for no scratches or fogging. Also act like sunglass a bit.
I do like the lighter much more expensive one better ($130)
But I spend a lot of time in the timber.

I like my mesh screened helmet. I do wear safety glasses under it most of the time. But the mesh is pretty tight.

I've had my Stihl mesh screened helmet so long the mash is beginning to rust through from sweat and moisture. I've got to get s new screen when I go back to get my saw.

They are a good investment against injury from any number of wood cutting errors. Get one, they're quite stylish too.:D

The mesh really saves you from being poked in the face when working in brush. After a while you forget it's there spit into the mesh.

I have the $50 Husqvarna branded helmet from lowes. It's not bad. I added a terrycloth sweatband to it as the vinyl one in the hat absorbs zero sweat. Eventually, I would like to get a Rockman branded hat. They used to make Stihl's hats for them, but unsure if still so. Very nice headgear in them and they are vented with a suede sweatband. I usually only wear the helmet if felling or doing really heavy weedeating/brushcutting. The Husky Tech Hat is pretty cool looking, but quite pricey.

I would recommend wire mesh (with choice of glasses undeneath) over a clear shield. Fogging and inevitable scratching of the plastic. I tried to use a clear shield for weedeating and fought fogging continually, so I abandoned the idea.

My helmet system is an older Peltor, got it 20+ years ago. Still works fine. I have the mesh, don't really like the plexiglass type as it scratches really easily. Also I don't wear safety glasses under the mesh, and I don't wear the helmet unless I'm actually doing tree felling work. I have safety glasses and goggles and I wear ear muffs or plugs when doing bucking and splitting.

If you want safety goggles without plastic lenses, there is a brand called Bugz? that has a mesh screen instead of the plastic. Obviously will not fog up. I have been meaning to get a pair to try out, but still haven't gotten them yet.

I wear my helmet everytime I start my saw. I wear it if I'm felling or bucking a tree. I trust my skills with a saw, but no matter how skilled one is, kick-back can happen for some unseen reason or just a momentary lapse of judgment. That metal mesh is the last chance to my face or life.:salute:

Thanks guys for the replies, it is appreciated. I think I will go back to TSC and see if they will lower the price of the helmet.

I thought I was the only person that weedwacked wearing a helmet!! Occasionally stuff still flies under the mesh and hits my face!

I wear my helmet with the mesh screen anytime I am using my saw or trimmer. I have just had way too much debris fly at my face not to. I have the technical Husqvarna helmet and it's very comfortable. Before that I had a Stihl entry level helmet and it was comfortable as well but lacked the ratchet adjuster that I really like.

I have had lots of jobs where hardhats were required so i kinda dont like them. I do wear one when i fall trees, its just might save your azz. I wear the bugz mesh goggles when i run the weedeater or if im sawing and the wind is blowing. I could not imagine wearing a helmet system with a clear plastic face sheild, it would drive me bonkers very quickly. 20171002_182542.jpg

Like this? No full cranium protection, tho- but as plastic as they get!

Right, I was simply speaking to this (plus, I said “no full cranium protection”)-

The plastic eye glasses I have does a good job of protecting my eyes but they fog up or the sweat runs down on them and it gets where I can not see what I am doing. I was thinking with a full face shield that the air flow through the shield would eliminates the problems I have with the eye glasses.
