I got busy and built this this afternoon. Made it out of 1" schedule 40 black pipe. The splits storage area is 43" wide x 67" high x 10" between the uprights. I can't remember what size the kindling spot it. I'm going to build a base for it by laminating 2x4's together, standing on edge. A couple of cross braces....put a set of casters/wheels under it, and done. The whole thing is 4' 10" long so I can screw it to a 5 foot long base...probably around 20" wide. I'm going to put some kind of a board on top of the kindling cubby and use it like a small end table. I built it specifically to fit well in the room it's going in, and leave room for my 'relaxin chair' on the kindling end.
Love it man, please post some pics when it's in place and stacked with wood. I was able to pick up an electric pipe bending machine a couple of years ago that can bend up to 1" schedule 40 and was thinking of doing something like that for outdoor wood storage in galvanized or maybe copper tubing..
Princess Auto (the Canadian version of Harbor Freight) had a pipe threading die set on sale for $77 Cdn Pesos, so I grabbed one. It has dies for everything from 3/8 NPT up to 2". It's Chinese made junk, but it did what I wanted it to do. I was able to put all the 1" schedule 40 stuff in my 36" lathe and use it for the turning power. I was then able to brace the ratcheting die holder against the carriage of the lathe, and Bob's your uncle. I'm able to thread both ends of a piece of pipe as quickly as my little 4x6" band saw could cut it. The remodeled wood stove room/alcove thing shouldn't be too much longer getting completed. The last of the drywall mud goes on tomorrow. Sanding on Tuesday, paint on Wednesday and Thursday, drop ceiling and lighting go in on Friday and Saturday, trim and new wood stove will go in on Sunday, I'll bring the wood rack downstairs and screw the rack part to the base part on Monday, and load it with wood......the wood stove inspector guy is due here on Tuesday the 10th, and hopefully the first fire that night too as long as the weather cools down. A friend of mine has a hydraulic bender, and he offered it to me to use. I've used them before, but I'm not the greatest operator, that's for sure. I kind of like the look of the fittings and square corners. It's got that early industrial look to it. Admittedly, I got the general idea for it from some pictures I saw on the internet, and put my own spin on it. I'm still planning on cleaning off the rough edges tomorrow and painting the whole thing flat black to match the stove and stove pipe. Anything will be a big improvement on the 2x4 box frame that I had for holding my wood before.
Looks great. Can't wait to see it finished. I am debating doing one like it for our cabin or doing one out of wood to contain the dirt that comes off the splits.
I put the main part of the base together today. 18 x 5ft 2x4's all gooped together with PL 400 premium construction adhesive. I'll leave it there for a few days before proceeding. I also bought some 2x10's to skirt it with to create a 2" lip above the outside to hopefully contain some of the wood chips....also to hide the casters on the bottom.
Finished the base tonight, and painted the rack flat black. Sorry....no pics of the rack part. It's out in the front yard drying and it's dark out now. The colorblind guy painting black pipe, flat black, in the dark. There's a joke in there somewhere. Hopefully I didn't over spray the whole front of the house. LOL.
Wha'd ya use for wheels under there? I made a roll-into-the-house-rack a few years ago...was had to find small wheels that would take the weight and still affordable...
I bought a new tool box for my service truck and used the wheels/casters that came with it. The only reason there's wheels under it is if I want to move it to clean behind it, or whatever. I didn't really build it with the intention of transporting wood. FYI....the flat black paint job on the rack portion turned out terrible. It looks like a colorblind guy did it in the dark......oh wait.....HE DID !!! LOL. Let's just call it a good attempt at a first coat. There's a ton of spots that I missed. I'm going to take it back outside tomorrow and do it properly in the daylight.
I got the new wood rack downstairs and put together today !!! Sorry for the quality of the pictures. Between the LED lights and the crappy camera on my phone.... Better than nothing I guess.
