Please define "far".........Prius vs 1995 "conventional" vehicle, I can make data say anything I want it to, too. Canceling any imbalance in production, did they figure in the production of the the ADDITIONAL 2 sets of batteries to get to 160,000 miles?

Not wanting to argue, just pointy out grey ares.

the one point I think everyone missing is how do you recycle them.. regular batteries can be.. the hybrid batteries are full of heavy metals and considered hazardous waste ... a local junk yard here will not take hybrids.. where conventional vehicles are easier to recycle in end.. not trying to get political but how do you get rid of waste always seems to be forgotten factor.. nuclear was the power solution but the waste!
asbestos same thing for fire retardent .. met a guy who made :makeitrain"bought old asbestos mine cheap.. lined it and now put the stuff back in the mine

read up on the toxicity of hybrids before you buy one because laws will change and you need to pay to dispose of it

I also lean a little green.. traveled a lot and the garbage and pollution in oceans by India and Singapore is insane.. but hey wood heat burned responsibly is green.. especially if you plant to replace what you cut

The whole reason I posted those two articles was because I detected more than a little sarcasm in "read that on the internet didja?," as if my summary and recollection were wrong. I Googled if a Prius is bad for the environment, and pulled excerpts from 2 of the first articles that appeared- which provides confirmation of exactly what I previously said, that the production of a Prius hybrid is substantially more resource dependent and damaging to the environment than a conventional engine vehicle manufactured stateside. I never said anything about long term comparisons of what is better for the environment, which needs a couple of things factored in, like how the vehicle is driven (throttle input and efficiency) and one big factor like longevity of a vehicle able to be in service. I guarandammtee you that my Ford Super Duty diesel will be on the road, serviceable with putting out Minimal emissions a hell of a lot longer than a hybrid, probably 3-4 times longer. From the emissions standpoint, the new 6.7 Liter combined with EGR (exhaust gas recirculation) and the emissions system with an in-line DPF (diesel particulate filter) is an extremely efficient, minimal emission vehicle. You can literally sit down and eat lunch at the tailpipe and you will not smell like exhaust.

We have some previous discussions on the Forum about the longevity of vehicles especially in the northern half of the country. The general input was that the trucks are usually on their last legs by 100,000 miles because of salted roads eating the vehicle. So, with that logic the Prius would have a snowball's chance in the hot place of hitting the referenced 160,000 miles to make the comparison to show more efficiency over the long term. In other regions, like where I am in the south it would certainly have a better chance of hitting that mileage...but my truck with an efficient diesel engine will blow it away as far as serviceable years on the road- and not have to keep replacing those multi-thousand $$$ hybrid batteries. My last 2006 Ford diesel was traded in 2010 with 135,000 miles on it and I got 78% of the sticker price on trade. They sold it in 2 days to a guy who is still driving it. I run into him every now and again and with 246,000 miles on it, it is still humming along. I would submit to my fellow Forum members that you will not find a 246,000 mile Prius in as good of a working condition...probably been junked by now and more raw materials have been mined, trained, trucked, and boated all over the world to make it's replacement.

I am all about doing right by the environment and I'm sure we all want to leave the world in better condition than we found it. I don't drive around unnecessatily, I separate and recycle household waste religiously, and try to conserve resources. I embrace technology that saves resources, like programmable smart thermostats. My whole point was that just because some things are marketed with a "green" label doesn't mean it is single handedly saving the world. Take solar panels- we are told they are amazing, save energy use because we pull free energy from the sun, and it's environmentally responsible. I think that's great- until I read that landowners have leased out fields and acreage for solar farms to the electric companies. Rain hits and runs off of the panels which have been manufactured with some very nasty chemicals, and the water hits the ground. Long after the solar panels have been removed, the ground is contaminated. Side effect of another "green" technology. Now, windmills and wind power is something I am fascinated by, although they have their impact too, in the form of battery storage and in some areas the lethal effect the turbines have on some birds. I am encouraged by the evolution of green technology, am not against it, and look forward to how we can more efficiently use resources in the future.

In summary, I submit that there is always more to a book than the cover. And, to put the thread back on track...good luck with the sealing of your trailer deck boards! :salute:

Well...... the earths atmosphere can and will rejuvenate, Pollution from the batteries are almost forever! I studied both these aspects, "Wind vs.Solar" and wind comes out "WAY AHEAD" than solar. If you believe in the greenhouse gas theory and all that fun stuff, well.... somebody better figure out how to stuff the "BILLION" tons of methane coming from the bottom of the ocean every year and cork the Volcanoes, let alone the 40 million acres, (average) of forest fires that burn uncontrollably every year! And also Dave, While teaching at a very famous academy I had learned that there is a source of fossil fuels the size of Australia that hasn't been touched yet, "good for about a thousand years", we won't be here then!

Our local utility is putting up about 10 acres of solar right now...:picard:

Panels are only good for about 15 years then there "junk"! Only about 20% of the panel is recyclable. The manufacturing cost does "not" out way the benefit, "although" some will argue the point. Solar has a "Looooooong" way to go.
Not to mention, acres of solar panels take up beauty and space. They look like crap and once one starts failing it's a chain reaction.

And according to an oil man the neighbor was talking to, there is a whole 'nother layer of gas/oil below what is being drilled now here in Ohio and all over (6k ft?) Supposedly the equipment and procedures to ecomomically and safely remove that deeper gas/oil are being developed/perfected now...

Oh, and somebody tell China to quit burning 900,000 tons of plastic every year to get the gold from the scrap computers! "I'm SURE" they'll listen!:rofl:

That was a quote from the article.

I agree on the grey areas.

I have no idea what kind of real world mileage Prius owners are getting, mpg or longevity, I don't own one or I'd let you know my numbers.

Yes sarcasm, only insofar as you can pretty much find an article on the Internet that says anything.

    And

I think we are saying the same thing regarding green technology and whether it makes sense for one individual to embrace it or not. The Prius certainly has its place, apparently not for you, not sure I'd buy one either.

Yes, climatology research is certainly in its infancy.

Let's hope "they" are right about that deposit as the world is certainly not ready to run out...still fossil fuel is a limited resource.

This is definitely a problem, kinda frustrating to be minding your "p" and "q"s if everyone else isn't also.

I heard someone recently (can't remember when/where?) (CRS much?) refer to natural gas as renewable energy...say wha?!
    Yeah, I guess...eventually!?

I may or may not have got stuck a speed bump in WWW's 1999 F250-stick/crew cab/xl bed, it was in the rear passenger wheel well of the Ford:rofl: . I had pulled all the way through a diagonal parking space since both parking spaces were very short the speedbump pulled in next me while I was on my sales appt. Leaving I looked both ways, nope, no one coming, no one around, turned the steering wheel to leave, got 1' and was stopped. bocefus78

Thankfully I only busted her tail light, and yes, I did spend that weekend with rubbing compound getting the red Geo Storm paint off the white Ford's rear panel.
