I'll burn anything... I have a confession... I secretly like saving the good stuff for...well...to look at with admiration. I haven't seen any basswood on my place though, lots of boxelders and a couple of cottonwood... I'm planning on dropping one of the cottonwood this winter and probably 20 or so boxelders. They'll be either fire starters or fillers. And I'll be glad to be thinning them out
Yeah, it's basswood, but that stuff burns well. Fast but well. It's great shoulder season wood, and you should snag it all. It be great next fall if you split it this Fall.
Big basswood is like gold to me. I save it for carving and for donating chunks to the local Scout troops for carving as well. Plus basswood lumber makes great furniture parts - drawer sides and internal pieces - it's light and easy to work. I wish my stash was bigger.
I left this morning to go get a quick load of the cheap stuff (basswood) thanks to all the guilt you guys laid on me! Turns out it was a better score. You see, about 150' away was another tree that was down. I hadn't checked on it the other day; once I saw basswood, I left. Turns out, the other tree was actually 4 maple!!! Woo hoo! It was raining; first a drizzle (no biggie) then just downright rain. I couldn't leave what I had cut up and just kept loading and resting. I managed to get two truck loads out of that mess (blow down) but man, am I ever beat up! I did take the camera along, but remembered to take a pic after I had the first load 1/2 empty. Just plain ol' forgot about the camera!
4 maple, four separate trees? That's cool man you hit Pay Dirt You have to pay more attention to what you're doing when everything is wet and slippery
I didn't collect all 4 trees. Just the biggest (dummy!) closest stuff (that depending on the size of the chunk wasn't all that close) Only slipped in the back of the truck twice. The woods were not that bad yet.
A big blow down mess probably safe to say it will be there when you get back there. Stay safe out there Dave
Man, there is no more slippery surface in work boots than a truck bed liner in the rain! Glad you got out without any injuries. Also good job on the score! I went to get some pine a coupe years ago (before I had connections to get it delivered..) and it turned into a dozen truckloads of maple.
