Secretary of State? Could also have your local police dept. run the vin# to make sure it is not stolen. There is a thread on TBN also about tractor liens. Gary
Check but I think in a case like that they will issue you a clear title. I am sure there are rules an procedures for those cases. Gary
Interesting, WWW bought a specialized trap gun for an unusually good price from another state, he called the sheriff that ran the serial number for free just to be safe before it was shipped. That said if it's a police auction they should be able to tell you if it has a clean title.
Without a (clear) title in hand, would the VA DMV let you tag it? They might be someone to call about the whole deal (police auction & no title) as they will ultimately see you standing at their counter looking for plates one day. What is it?
I thought it was illegal to sell a vehicle without a title. I just looked at sale bill in the news paper again. This truck is listed under "abandoned or tax lean vehicles." Yes, lean, not lien So I guess that means that I may have to pay the taxes on it before I can get a title. I'm thinking I would have to file for an abandoned vehicle title. No, it could not be registered with out a title. I am hoping that I won't have to get a salvage title. The truck is an 04 Dodge 3500. From using a VIN decoder from the auto parts store I can tell it is an HO Cummins. So it should be a 6 speed. Then I used another free online VIN decoder and it looks like it is a regular cab and dual wheel. That is not exactly the configuration I want but if it goes cheap I'm interested. Who knows the truck could be wrecked really bad too. I bet the batteries are dead and they won't start it. If that is the case I won't pay anymore for it than what it is worth with a bad engine. They could have also seized the truck in a drug bust. There is also a 2016 Challenger at the auction. I was telling my Dad about it and he jokingly said it was a Hellcat. I ran the VIN on it and it is a Scatpack. Hard to tell what that thing will bring.
Tax lien would be a vehicle that was seized for taxes. Still gotta believe they will give you a clean title of some sorts. Gary
True, it could have been seized because of taxes. The auction is at the police impound lot. It says listed under no titles. They probably give you a bill of sale.
If it's a police auction, it's because it was somehow forfeited through the court system due to some sort of involvement in criminal or criminal traffic violations, i.e. held due to owner arrest and then the vehicle accrued storage fees to the city on the impound lot and the owner never came. They run VINs and make sure that the vehicles aren't stolen, and if it checks clear, it goes on the auction block. If the vehicle has a lien on the title, they offer it back first to the bank for the cost of the storage fees. You will get paperwork that shows you bought it legally from the city, and therefore you can apply for lost title/no title at the DMV. Remember that these auctions are "as is, where is." You may have to pay for a tow off the lot. Good luck on the truck!
Kind of what I was thinkin too...no way a police auction is gonna sell you a "no title, sorry, you just SOL" vehicle...
I forgot about applying for a lost title. That should be easier than an abandoned title. Thanks, I need all the luck I can get. It will probably bring some ridiculous price. Sent from my SM-G950U using Tapatalk
Proceed with caution. There are auctions out there that do sell vehicles that can't be titled and or licensed. Sometimes it'll be stated that way. Like someone else has mentioned, call and ask your DOT office or where ever it is that you get your titles and plates form. CYA!
No, the police under current unconstitutional laws can seize a vehicle through civil forfeit without going through the court system even if the person has not been charged with a crime. It can be a nightmare to fight these unconstitutional seizures.
Not just vehicles either.... What type of auction is it? If they say lein, it could be a bank repo. In which case I've seen really clean stuff, then bad stuff where they knew it was being repo'd and deliberately destroyed.
It was a Sheriffs auction. There were old cop cars. Then there were vehicles that were seized or never picked up from impound, there were some other county vehicles, and vehicle that were seized because of taxes. The auction was today. VOLKEVIN was right, if they don't have the title they give you paperwork to get a title. My Dad went with me. We stopped at Chick-fil-a for breakfast. We were both think that we may see this guy we know that has a used car lot that goes to the auction. They no more than brought the food to the table and in he came. He came over and ate with and he said he was headed to the auction. He told my Dad he should by that redneck looking Dodge truck they had. Somehow he had looked at the vehicles even though there was not a time to preview the stuff. He said it had big knobby tires on it. His buddy that is a deputy said the Dodge was drag racing another truck and ran from the cops. The way he talked the cops could not keep up with him. Then they caught up to him when he was sitting along side the road broke down. He said the deputy said there was smoke coming out of the turbos. I thought turbos.........did he accidentally put an "s" on that or does it have compound turbos. So we got to the auction the truck was not a bad looking truck other than the aftermarket bumper and the hydro dipped wheels with skulls on them. When I am at an auction I try to look at stuff but not look too interested or try draw attention to it. The hood was up it had a compound turbo setup. It had the stock holset with something else. I'm not sure what it was. The turbine was polished. It had an ATS manifold, arp head studs, and a fass lift pump. My Dad noticed it had a junkyard front diff in it because it had a p/n wrote on it with a paint marker and both rear axle seals were leaking. The windshield was busted and the batteries were dead. Then there were some people there that knew the guy that owned it. They were calling someone trying to figure out what happened. They thought he blew a radiator hose but then the saw that was not the case. So time to start the auction and the auctioneer said we are starting here and will finish up with the white truck. So I had to wait til the end. I was thinking I would go $4200 on it. I know I can get an engine for around $4,000. They started auctioning it off. There was deputy there that stopped the auction and said they guy was racing and ran and they caught him when something happened to the engine. I forget where people jumped in in and started bidding maybe $1000. It got to $1800-2000 and the one bidder dropped out. They auctioneer could not get any bids then I jumped in. It was me and the people that knew the guy that owned it. We were going back and forth with no sign of ending. Then we hit $4200 and were still going. So I thought I'll push it on up to $5000 and I had a bid at $4,900 and the other guy got it for $5000. I may have been to generous with my original $4200, IDK. At $5000 for the truck, then 4,000 for an engine he'll be into it for $9,000 pretty quick. It is a 21hr job to change the engine in it. Then fluids, filters, and the other small stuff. Then batteries ($300), windshiled ($200+), rear axle seals, ignition lock cylinder(they did not have the keys). Then who know who good the front end was on it and the brakes, clutch, and trans. I think the average person will have $12,000 or more in getting it going. I can do all the work myself so it would not have cost me any labor. It sucks when you go to an auction and stand around and wait on something and not get it but that is better than paying to much and regretting it. I've learned that every time I lose out one something like that there is a better deal around the corner. Also the Dodge challenger scat pack brought $30,000. It was a tax seizure. It was a six speed car with 2000 or 3000 miles on it. There was also a 029 in fair condition. That they did not start that brought $170.
