Canine Coprophagia

Sorry, not to be inconsiderate of your dilemma! However, talk to the vet, there is a supplement you can use on the dog's food that will make the feces less than palatable to the pooch. I think wildwest mentioned it.
Did have a dog that loved to snack out of the cat's litterbox, thankfully he was only a temporary guest...Good Luck!

Dave, no offense taken here. This dog is with me at work and along most of my day. She can sit on command and does sit, stay, wait for her food. I cant seem to motivate her to poop on command to get her trained for the house training though. Timing of her bowel movements is inconsistent at best, maybe for the intake of random poop.... I'm really frustrated.

 

As long as you dont pull your engineering degree out and chit on my pferd tool post im your friend....

 

Sometimes, life just hands you a s**t sandwich....and you just have to eat it.

 

So if it's behavioral, she may grow out of it or you may be able to train it out of her. There are food supplements designed to make the stool unpalatable, some say pineapple or pumpkin works, personally I would steer away from the hot sauce.

It could be a digestive issue. Is she underweight or constantly hungry? Are the stools loose, or particularly smelly? This is sometimes an indicator that the food isnt being digested well. She may have an enzyme deficiency that doesn't allow her to digest the food well, this would also make the stool more palatable because it will still contain undigested protein. There are supplements that will help pre digest the food to aid her own digestion, or you could shop around for a food designed for an animal with the enzyme deficiency. Your vet should be able to diagnose the enzyme deficiency issue.

Coprophagia along with rolling in feces are normal behavior in dogs, disgusting but normal. Have her checked to rule out other medical problems as there are several treatment options.

-I'm just funnin', I know it's a real issue. I had a dog that did it too a long time ago. We had a fairly small side yard, and I still believe that it was a strong instinct in our female dog to be clean. Like if there was mess there and she could see and smell it, she would dispose of it...by eating it. It was nasty, but we got a good handle on it by walking her more and trying to time it after meals so she'd poop on the walk, and always picking up the yard religiously. It helped a lot, and when we moved to a house that had a large yard, the problem was no longer a problem.

 

Update, we are about 5 days into dosing her food with pineapple juice. Things are looking up, she doesnt even want to sniff at her duece anymore....
