I have always called them "asswholes". They usually get burnt up at one of the fire piles or given away as camp wood. I try to cut out the bigger knots and crotches before skidding to the processing areas. I will not fight a piece on the splitter. If being difficult, right to the asswhole pile they go, because that's what they are!
No matter how careful I am with my good splits I can't get them to stay up straight much over 4 to 5ft how in the world do you get those uglies in the stack to stay upright?
Some look cool , if there big enough iv hollowed them out to use as bird boxs . I get loads because my woods scrounged so iv a steel cage to throw the ones that won't split into
Having a pot bellied stove where my longest firewood length is 6 inches, ALL my firewood is "uglies". Because of that I do not even bother to stack them; just dump them out of my dump trailer and push them into my woodshed with my tractor or bulldozer.
I noticed the pic of it you submitted..... How's about a review of it? Pro's vs. cons sort of thing....not brand specific; just a "I like this about it" and "This is a pain" sort of thing????? Thanks. Kinda thinking about getting one for the screen porch, thats why.
That doesn't look like very many uglies to me. You should see mine. I have been stacking all of my wood leaned against a chain link fence and even that won't hold up a pile of uglies.
I have a separate area for the uglies. Right next to the outdoor pit. Some will be used for that, and I figure I can bring a few in each week for the stove. I got alot of precut rounds this year that have to be trimmed down to fit in my stove. i will be making a bin or 2 for them.
I keep a pile of the "uglies" off to the side and that's what my adult kids use for bonfires and hotdog roasts. Those pieces are perfect for that.
I am particular to 18 to 20" cord wood. It fits nice in stove and burns long tine, overnight.. Little short pieces I stack in pile too. 2 short pieces together equal 20ish.. I like the knotty chunks, daytime burnin wood. Looks pretty dried out already.. good stuff man.
