You can live your life however you choose. If my truck hits you broadside, your thinking is the least common denominator.

Think of it this way -- how many cars on the road weigh more then a one ton truck?

And how many vehicles on the road weigh more this car/motorcycle?

If I'm going to be in an accident I'd rather be in the vehicle that weighs more...

The majority of cars on the road are much lighter these days.. Gas is not going to be cheap again you can bet on it.. Expect to see many smaller cars in the future.. Germany has incredibly small cars for a reason with many that are 1 liter engines and some diesels at that!

We all gotta die of something. This Elio would be far far safer than my Honda ST1100 was. Especially because on the ST1100 it was nearly impossible to resist twisting that throttle wide open.

And it had 200 more CCs than this Elio and weighed 2/3 as much.

I like it, I would definitely look at one, but I ride bikes too. 84 MPG beats my wing by a lot. I know it's hard for americans to give up their tanks they drive, but if we are going to survive the energy crisis that IS coming. things will have to change. It would hard to give up my diesel truck, but someday I may have to. If gas gets to the price it is in Europe we all will be driving small cars like they do. We have been fortunate here on prices, they have been over 5 bucks a gallon for years there.

Don't want to buy gas here right now. It has dropped to 1.31 a litre so that would be about $5.24 a US gal. I drove a 3 cyl Geo for many years. Awesome gas mileage on the highway but rather dropped if you were stopping and starting and in town with a lot of hills. My SIL has a Smart car and hates going shopping in it or going anywhere long distance as there is absolutely no way to pack anything in it. Right now I have a Toyota Corolla and that seems to be the best solution for in town and long distance.

The Elio's primary role will be to carry me and my lunch to work and back.. Not the be all to end all just a tool to get the job done and hopefully have fun doing it!

I like the concept, but I'll admit its a bit small for my liking. I didn't look up the specs, but I'd guess it would take a shoehorn to get me in and a winch to get me out.

My daily driver gets a lot better mileage than it's rated. Cruze Eco with a 6 speed manual. With a light foot and sensible driving I can get in the mid 40s all day long. The attached pic was a trip home from Vanderbilt, MI last summer.

If nothing else, cars like the Elio might help spur innovation for the rest of the auto market.

Honestly my new job will be a 40-60 mile drive each way (two offices twenty miles apart, closet one is 40 miles from home, and my family doesn't want to move.)

This vehicle would have been perfect but now it looks like my wife will be joining me as an office manager at the closer of the two offices. I don't think this will work for a two person daily commute long term. It's ok in a pinch but not for a daily drive for two.

The claim is large people fit into it.. Well over 6' tall.. Cruze does well I'd say.. Nice enough looking too! My 08 Sentra can get crazy mileage too but generally I get 30-34 mpg average once I calculate economy .. The trip computer tends to exaggerate the real mpg and I am a stickler for details so I always calculate the real world economy..

I'm 6' 4", so legroom is first on my priority list. For a while it seemed that the majority of automakers figured on nobody being taller than 6' when they designed the cars. Granted, I turn any car I drive into a 3 seater when I put the seat all the way back, but at least the option is there now. It's no fun driving like you're in a clown car. :)

The trip computer in the Cruze is a bit optimistic, but calculated MPG usually comes out about 2% less than what the trip computer spits out.

I'd guess in 10 years someone will have something that will achieve 100mpg+ and be commercially available on a large scale. I'm glad to see that Elio is manufacturing these in the USA.

Elio drivers will be able to snub their nose as they pass a gas guzzling Prius!

I've seen plenty of concept cars with some great claims and still wonder why they don't hit the market. Well, some do, but over in Europe which does not help us at all.

I also agree that until people get over their need for the big heavy vehicles, that won't help at all. I also have never understood the saying about buying a low cost and/or low weight vehicle so many people seem to think someone is going to die in them. Look at the Hummer! One of the worst and it is in no way a small vehicle and for sure is a gas guzzler.

Most people really need a car that goes from 10-15 miles at a time and most of that in the city. No, these little cars, like the smart car, are not built for freeway driving. Keep things in perspective.

What I drive now.. Bigger doesn't mean safer..

This is fact NOT fiction.. You are better off in my Sentra than an F350 in a side crash!

My wife's just happy I'm no longer on a bike. I'm not worried about comparing semi's, triaxles, trucks, cars and subcompacts.
