All the time I see ads on CL for people selling wood by the cord and they have a picture of a pick me up truck claiming to have a cord of wood on it. Loose tossed wood occupies 180-190 cubic feet. Yesterday it took two loads to haul 3 measured full cord, the first had over half so I estimate this to be about 1.7 cord, the trailer is 83" x 18' and the truck box is 8'.

Your question is wrong. It should be, "What are those other folks doing wrong?" They have no clue.

Well, it could be they are just showing a picture of the wood and not actually claiming that one truck load is a cord. However, that is a concern for me if I do have to purchase some wood to get ahead. All of the trucks around here I see advertising wood just shows it tossed in the back. If I call and order a cord of wood and a big ol' dump truck comes out and dumps the wood, I won't know until I stack it if it is a cord. So if it is short will it be a hassle if I call and say, "Hey, my cord of wood was short." How has that worked for anyone else buying wood?

True, they could just be posting a picture of "a load" of wood. I'd say that's more typical than the actual load of wood you'd be getting.
As far as the delivery and if you don't get as much as you were supposed to get, well I'd say you are SOL.

Ask if it's not stacked in the truck to have a weight ticket so you know your not shorted? You can go by weights.

I would just make sure that they know that you want to make sure your getting what you pay for...a whole cord, 128 cuft stacked . If they know your an informed buyer hopefully you won't have to deal with that.

    Your doin it right .
You can fit a face cord in a pick em up , some people say cord when ,what they actually have is a face cord , they leave out the word face , sometimes I think they don't even know what a full cord is :hair::wacky:

    • Non-packaged firewood must be sold by the cord or by fractions of a cord. One cord, when properly stacked, should be 8 feet long by 4 feet high and 4 feet wide (128 cubic feet).
So you can sell it as one third of a cord , but you can't call it a face cord
Edit: calling it one third of a cord , I think is gooder :)

Firewood regs are set by the Feds in Canada. There's some flexibility in the units as you can use full 128 cu.ft. cords, cubic feet, cubic metres and the totally obscure cubic decimetre. I'm surprised they haven't specified hectolitres. They had to pull the cubic decimetre out of their hats, or that well known place lower down. (The cubic decimetre is also known as a litre! :loco:  )
