I had decided I needed a bigger saw to handle the dead and downed trees on my wood lot. I have a Stihl MS250 but the trees here average 15-24" diameter. I've been pining for a MS391 so I've been rat holing a little money back to get one eventually. My birthday and anniversary are a couple of weeks away so my wife surprised me with an early gift. Yep, a MS 391! I had to test it out today on a 17" diameter dead standing oak. This thing is awesome! This tree was clear 38' to the first limb. I'm gonna have fun with this thing! My wife has a good head on her shoulders, I think I'll keep her.
Congrats Brad M! I'm enjoying the pizz of out my 562xp with about 7 tanks through it. And love the standing dead oaks. Got two today, one hauled up, and the other waiting for tomorrow. Enjoy!
The specs look pretty similar to the 391. I've never owned a Husky before but I've heard good things about them.
Time to update your hardware avatar. I've never had a Stihl, but ran a friends once. Felt like a bare knuckled fist fight. I don't remember what model it was. Probably a chain issue. Now that I'm hanging around here, I'm looking for an opportunity to put one in the cashe' to give it a fair look.
Ha that is an awesome present. I can relate also to the present thing. For my birthday last year my wife bought me a DHT 27 ton woodsplitter. This year she got me a saw for smaller stuff and limbs. It was a ms180. Its always great when you and your spouse are that in tune to each other. Her bday is comin up in October. O got to come up with something just as good for her.
That is an awesome present, and thanks for the review of it. I was wondering what Stihl had for a mid-sized saw. I liked the Stihl MS 441, but my saw shop did not have it in stock and would have to order it. My last saw got mashed by my skidder so I did not have time to wait. Instead I bought a Husqvarna 562, but I think I am going to bring it back. It is kind of gutless.
Let's see if I have this right. Turning the want for a new saw, into a need for a new saw, by crunching existing saw. Methinks I have that right. Sent from my SM-T280 using Tapatalk
I got accused of that by Mrs Lodgedtree. I also told her after trying out the Husqvarna 562, that I won't be upset when I drive over that saw. My father has an old Partner Chainsaw that he often quipped about. He would say, "I got an old Partner Chainsaw that is out in the woods everyday...ever since it would not start and it flew over the brush pile that is!". He is not joking. It watched it make a nice graceful arch through the air before it landed on its final resting place. That was 20 years ago, but we logged that 3 years ago by mechanized logging, so I am sure it was mashed too.
Yes, most likely a chain issue. Or drive spocket. Mine runs like butter-at least when the chain is good and sharp. Any brand saw should run relatively smooth with a sharp chain, some more so than others.
What an awesome birthday gift! Hmmmm.... how to copy/paste this thread URL into my wife's email and do it secretly ????? JUst kidding.
I have found the Husqvarna's tend to be rather soft compared to Stihl anyway, and then to go from a 76 cc saw (MS 461) to a 62 cc (Husqvarna 562) might have been just too much. I am good friends with the owner of the saw shop, and would love to support him, but 20 years ago he went out of selling Stihl's. He has got great service, is close by, but boy I wish he sold Stihl's. I am not sure what Stihl is doing, but I know a lot of Stihl Dealerships are getting out of them. I have to drive 21 miles to get to a Stihl shop now, and their service sucks. I just got the mashed Stihl back last week and it ran worse coming out of the shop then when it went in (hard starting). Of course they just blame the saw owner on the gas mixture they are using...no matter the problem it is having. They are not open tomorrow (Monday's) so I will go logging with it one more day, do some real logging and make some daylight in the swamp by felling trees, and see how it goes. If it is still acting up I will go chat with him about taking it back
Awesome gift, congratulations!! keep the chips flying looks like it turns out you married the right gal
