I managed to scavenged some wood today. My brother-in-law's sister had two willow oaks (correct me if I am wrong) dropped that were too close to her daughter's house. One of the trunks had been dragged into a pasture and the other was still in front of the house. These were some huge rounds but the Beast cut through it without care. Every time I use the Beast I think about the good folks here on FHC that made it possible for me to own this saw; thank you. I pulled the muscle in my side this morning before I headed out so it was not as easy working to get the wood. My sister hauled two loads for me but we were limited because she had the cover on the bed. I got most of the wood that was in the pasture and only touched the smaller stuff at the house. Rains are moving in so it will be after Labour Day Weekend before I can return. I cut the rounds to 16 inches and it was all that my sister and I could do to lift them in the bed of the truck. I left the butt end of the trunk in the pasture as the rounds were getting too large for us to handle. I will have to cut them shorter if there is any hope of us loading them. I am not sure how my little electric splitter will handle these.

    Nice chunks of far :woodsign:
Don't cut em shorter , cut em same length , lay em on their side and noodle em into quarters .
Don't try to split the bigger stuff right in the middle , start at the edges

Might be as easy to bring the little electric splitter to the site. Eliminate most of the handling. Maybe?

Nice wood you should be able to split it just slab off a little at a time or noodle them as HDRock said.

I didn't bring any splitting tools with me; did not even know the trunks were going to be as large as they were. Lots of good wood. When I return after labour day I will be better prepared. Yes, agree, cut at the same lengths but reduce the size for loading. Sister also said she would get the cover (one of those fiberglass things that sit over the bed and has a lid) removed for easier loading. I hope to get as much wood as possible. The owners had also offered the wood to others but my guess is that they did not have the saws for such large cuts; which is why I am so grateful for everyone that helped me to get the Beast; it made it possible for me to get this wood.
MasterMech ; just wanted to say thanks again and let you know the saw is doing great. She was a little hard to start the first time; I had not used the saw for a few months, but after that she started with no problems; I did use fresh mixed fuel. The starting issue that I had with the jerking is gone. There were no issues with power at all; she made the large cuts happily. Thanks so much for your help.

Gonna be sitting on that stack a bare minimum of 3 years. Get it back to the hacienda, s/s'd.

Bit of bad news today. My sister's truck has a problem with the ignition switch. We experienced it yesterday during one start time. Sister told me that her husband is going to order a new switch but there is also a security feature; it is a GM Dakota, and the computer might have to be programmed for the new switch. At any rate, I may have to haul a bit at a time in the boot of the Buick. I really want to score on this wood and hope someone else does not scarf it up.

    "Oak envy" from here

    Nice score

IMO most wood splits easier when green, so split it ASAP
The big ones (with no limbs) may pop apart pretty easy with a few taps of a maul,

Yes. I didn't touch it today although the rains are not doing that much. I was wanting to rest the pull muscle. I need to strengthen my core muscles but it seems the exercises that I keep saying I am going to do never get done.

Yes, until then I will work on seeing what I need to take back to reduce the size of the rounds so we can load them. I managed to get everything I bucked yesterday home. There was a small bank that helped to reduce the height of the gate from the ground Then the large ones we tilted up onto the gate and then we use that as leverage to get them loaded.

You can use some rounds like steps to get the bigger ones up in the truck too

Ramps are where it's at. I've loaded some wood I had no business getting into my truck with a good pair of ramps. I've even got new wood on mine, courtesy of Grandpa who wanted something to do and saw the condition of the old wood I had on there. Nice oiled 2x10 fir, should last quite a while.

Yes, we had nothing on hand to use for a ramp. So that will be included as well if needed. However, if I can pop these down in size, then a ramp won't be needed. Did not venture out today; we got some rain from what is left of Harvey. Then Irma will be headed this way but I will be on holiday when Irma hits; if she hits and goes inland.
