Threw a maul into the little pile of black locust today. I was surprised. I must say, it split a whole lot easier than the typical tight-ring, knotty Douglas I am accustomed to. I've mushroomed many a sledge and maul in the rounds of fir. My experience splitting apple and cherry that has been heavily pruned, is one of futility. I 90% split by hand. But for the fruit wood, I have to call on my buddies hydraulics. Now, here's hoping for some cooler/wet weather. The province has been on fire this summer and much forest/crown land has been off limits. Itching to get out and run some vintage magnesium. Cheers.
You can try some of mine, I feel like if I even try thinking of burning that stuff, my toes get hot. Its like realizing you have wood that burns like magnesium. Ever watch that in science?
Great wood. As said above, sitting 2 years makes it incredible... I have some that was cut in the mid late '80's. It might be seasoned enough.
That's the nice thing about locust, it just lasts and lasts....alas the reason the old boys always used it for fence posts. In all fairness though I do have to say it is not my favorite species as it used to be. The cat stove just does not do as well on it unless I mix it or put some in on a big coal bed. I have a lot of it in the stacks so I definatly will be burning some.
