I moved my winter wood supply closer to the house and used metal roofing to cover it. Tired of the hassle of tarps. When I looked at my pile, I thought that this could be a real head banger with not to good of results. I need ideas to cover the roofing edges. One idea I had was to use that foam pipe insulation on the edges, but would like ideas that I don't have to go out and purchase the insulation. Another idea would to cover the edges with duct tape. Have any of you tried this approach? Did it work? Any other ideas. I could just see myself running out for a load of wood when it is blowing at hurricane force, snow axle deep to a tall ferris wheel and putting a big gash in my head.
I think the duct tape idea is a good one that would be cheap. You could tear the duct tape up the middle or even in thirds and double or triple it up?
How about those cheap swim noodles that you can pick up in a $ store? Run a split down them lengthwise and figure out some way for them to stay attached to the edge of the metal. That is another advantage of tarps...just let them hang over as you pull wood off the pile. I used metal roofing in the early 90's, but then had the dang edges hanging over while I still pulled off the pile. No woodshed, you see and had an OWB back then too.
I like that idea and hadn't thought of it. I do have several hoses I don't use any more that need retired.
Probably wouldn't even need to fasten them but if ya did need to , just drill a hole behind the hose every couple feet and fasten with chicken bands ( zip ties ), bend or cut the corners of the metal to form a 45
You're only supposed to have to whack your head once to learn not to do that, right ? I've cut a slit in a tennis ball and shoved the ball over the corners so the corners would stop snagging my jackets/shirts. More worried about eyeballs, they don't always heal well.
That will probably work and be softer, I just thought clear would look good , but would it protect you good enough better than metal I guess
Grinding the corner is probably what I will do on the older roofing. The left over new roofing material is cheap and not the thickness of the old stuff. It woud be easy to crimp the corners on those pieces. I am a slow learner. Bending the edges over on the new stuff would be easy, but the older roofing would be a pain. Plus I would like to keep the new roofing in new condition so if I need it it is whole.
Wear a thick hat! All good ideas here - I'd be tempted to use pool noodles as the dollar store usually has a big bin full. Can't get much cheaper unless materials are already on hand. Of course, you'd then have some pretty bright stacks.. Maybe the hose idea is better.
