Not the same stove family I don't believe...the 13 and 30 are older models...
Dunno if he has checked in lately or not, but Englander rep mike holton is around here sometimes...I'm sure he'd be glad to answer any questions

One big difference is the Madison only requires ember protection under it, instead of a specific R-value Hearth like the NC 13 + 30 require

Thanks guys for correcting me.. I just know a lot of threads on NC 13 and 30 where it is a great budget heater but very little on madison...

As HD said, there are a number of people on that other site that have 'em, and I don't remember anybody disliking the stove...even the early ones that had to have the auto setback mechanism tweaked...

Englander stoves is a fine company with a fantastic customer service department.

I was so pleased with my nc-13 and the service department, after a phone call (turns out to be my fault), that I bought the stove I should have in the first place, the nc-30. I use the 13 to heat a small cottage and the 30 to heat a garage/workshop.

Mike Holton is a great and knowledgeable person always willing to help out. I haven't ever met Mike personally but I'm sure it would be an opportunity missed if I never took advantage of the chance! He is a great asset to this forum.

I don't understand why and how some people can run down this company due to their own inexperience/ignorance.

I get busy with other things; such as having to replace the transmission in my car. Plus, sometimes I feel like some members get a bit harsh with me and I get scared to comment.

This is a good stove in my opinion, I am really happy with it. It gives out a lot of heat; although mine is the larger model and I may could have gone with the smaller unit but I got a really good buy on my stove at Lowe's. The view of the fire is great; which I liked because it can be like having a fireplace. Also, with this model you don't have to build an expensive high R rated hearth as it only needs ember protection. I do need to see about moving the hearth pad I built out further as I went with the minimum and did have an ember to roll off the hearth once. Keep in mind that last year was my first true time using a wood burning stove so I had to learn a lot.

I have no issues starting fires in the stove once I learned how. Now it is a snap to get a fire going in just a few minutes from a cold start; although I do crack the door open and stand watch until the kindling is burning hot. Then I add wood and shut the door and can use the auto setback feature.

The included heat shields are great, they really do work and the wall behind the stove is cool. The only part of the wall to get warm is where the stove pipe radiates onto. The standard blower; as others have noted, doesn't really do much to move air. I used a small floor stand fan to help move the air as well as the ceiling fan.

Again, keep in mind that I have the larger stove. The glass retainers might be different in your stove. Last year the glass became loose. ESW thought it could be due to the glass being cut too small. However, the replacement glass they sent out was the same size. I took some careful measurements of my door, glasss, etc and meant to send them to ESW but I am bad about getting sidetracked on other things; like building a new fence around the valley garden. I don't know if the door on my stove could have been cast wrong and that is why I took the measurements but then got sidetracked on this.

All that I may need to do is to have longer retainer tabs.

If you can get a good deal on the 01 model, I would go for it. I don't think you would be unhappy with the stove. ESW is a great company to work with, they really do customer service the right way. I do not regret buying this stove, I am very happy with it even with this glass issue. I do need to return to to the glass issue though as the heating season will be here before we know it.

CoreyB feel free to PM me with questions or maybe even start a new Madison thread. I may be the only one on FHC with the Madison.

The 30-NC is a bit larger than my Madison 02. However, the 30-NC requires the proper R value (maybe 4? others will know). I also liked the looks of the Madison over the 30-NC. I was looking at the 30-NC but building the proper R valve hearth was going to be a problem for me.
I posted my floor plan on here somewhere of what I am heating.

These are outright lies. I never said I wanted a new stove and I always said I was happy with the stove and I think I said something along the lines of that you would have to fight me to take my stove. I will be honest, the reason that I am afraid of posting on FHC is because of Yopper Dave.

Let's not worry about any drama at this time; the main thing here is to help CorryB decide if the Madison is a good stove for his needs. I am a bit biased because I own one but I really like the stove and if he can get a good buy in one I say go for it.

post # 21 of this thread

This is a new stove folks, really should not be having to do this. I wonder if ESW would send a complete unit in exchange for this one?

have you contacted my office yet? I do not have enough info from your profile in here to find you in my system. if you have not today would be a great day to call with the warm couple days phone traffic to my CS department has been very light with far shorter than average hold times. number is 800-245-6489 we are open from 8-5 eastern today

and post #55 from this thread

ok, got your PM's and I have the emails you sent me, im going to do a bit of looking through my system, did you send a registration in for the stove? if not I may need to call you, i'll let you know via PM in which case im going to need a phone number to call you. if I have you in my system I can take care of it without needing the number in which case I will let you know status as well

as for the thermometer, where you have it will be a relatively accurate reading (remember these things aren't dead on to the degree anyway and give an approximation of actual temp)

47 and 55 were posted by a representative of Englander stoves

Great job on the tranny BTW. Glad you were able to make it go again. and save money along the way.

LOL, hahahaha,  I was talking about the bloody door unit, not the whole stove. Which you should have known if you were not always so quick to do whatever it is you are doing; to me it is being a bully. If you will just ignore my posts, I will ignore your post, and the drama can end.

Eric, perhaps you should have waited for my response. Yopper is still wrong although I will give him the benefit of the doubt and retract that he is lying, he just had trouble with reading comprehension. Most people would understand that when you are talking about a stove DOOR and say, I wonder if they will just replace the unit, that you mean the stove DOOR.

BTW; the reason I was wondering about replacing the door is that you have to remove the door gasket to get to the screws for the glass retainers and I was unsure about doing all that and replacing the glass. It was not that hard of a job really but it wasn't the glass, so it may still be that the door was cast wrong; or maybe not. All I know is that the glass did come loose on the stove and that does worry me.

I posted my hearth build which was simple; a sheet of plywood, cut the corners, tile and grout. I finished the edges with some oak quarter round and stained. For my 02 I wish I had made it deeper but I think I can slide the hearth out from the wall and put a spacer between the hearth and the wall. If you are wanting a raised hearth, then you could frame it out with regular wood and then do the same. Not needing a high R value for the hearth saved me some money on the stove install.
