Out with ash, in with white oak

    Think I got the last of the dead ash out of the part of the woods I like to keep clean, and hopefully my 50 white oaks will take off in future year. Did get about a cord of 6-10 inch ash logs

    They are tubes with an oak stake to keep the deer from eating them

    I planted some Red Oak a few years back...most of them are 10-12' tall now, except a couple that the deer keep chewing the new growth off of...:hair:

    Competition is good. A crowded forest yields straighter stems. Once that first 16-24 feet of straight trunk is established, a light thinning would be warranted to keep the desired trees and cull the weak, crooked or diseased trees. Allowing too much sunlight in would trigger epicormic branching which would reduce the value of a saw log. Of course for Greg it would be his grandkids or great grandkids who would see the results. Who knows where we will be then. Perhaps one saw log would buy enough uranium to power our home nuclear reactors for 20-30 years....:eek: nice to see some good forest stewardship...
