I see that the forum was closed relating to the EPA proposal for new standards. I am linking the EPA document with whats under the hood to your proposal.

    https://www.federalregister.gov/art...-heaters-new-residential-hydronic-heaters-and

I was under the impression that this will only go into effect for new stoves that are manufactured.

I would suggest contacting your representative in your district if you do not agree with the new standards that are coming out.

Usually I am against regulations but some how there has to be education or common ground guidelines for older OWB usage rural and residential. I think it would be better suited for massive incentives for upgrades to secondary burn technology.

I gave my neighbor a couple of cords of dry wood and offered assistance if he would clean up his burn habits and gave some advice on better burn practices. Something had to be done it was affecting elderly farm steads a 1/4 mile down wind.

what angers me is the "back door" politics they are pulling to get what the want. The "Sue and Settle" tactics are BS. Just promise me, guys....don't let it get political here. This is pertinent information for our forum, and I'm glad to have it here, but there are underlying political motives and agendas that drive policies like this. Lets try our best to remain neutral on responses here. I'm all for cleaner air as well, but going after a relatively small number of "offenders" when you have entire countries that dump pollutants directly in the atmosphere (and we buy our goods from said countries), I think punishing woodburners is ridiculous. There are a LOT of jobs at stake here in this industry (stove manufacture, firewood sales, etc), what's to become of them if they don't comply? And after these rules are enforced on stove manufacturers, who's going to be able to buy a $7,000.00, 3.0 cu.ft. woodstove? It's a double-edged sword, for sure.

Your post is dead center on the money. When I see BS like this new guvmint whiz bang regulation, I think about all of those beaches in Calif that outlawed small fires on the beach in the evening. My backyard fire pit WILL get used as always… with or without an EPA sticker on the side of the rocks… Guvmint … snort…

Just saw the local news... Jotul is saying they will need to spend millions to re-tool. And that will mean $3-500 increase per stove to manufacture. 25% increase in prices at the retail level.

Being informed, knowledge and education are key when overcoming these issues in my opinion. Power plants, propane delivery, fuel standards for automotive and medium heavy trucks are all under scrutiny right now not just the solid fuel industry. I think it is more of a broader energy policy shift.

I remember watching some Frontline tv reports out of New York and other parts of the North East about wood smoke pollution and neighbors complaining. Part of the context was citizen complaints to the attorney general about OWB issues. Rather than burning practices and proper firewood handling, the majority of the blame seems to be centered on the appliance rather than operator.

I am not negating that there is a politically driven motive behind some of these "back door" law suits one bit, but there is a growing portion of the population against solid fuel use. I get questioned at work about burning wood at work with fellow coworkers and sometimes attacked for burning wood. That is until I give them the "carbon neutral" proper firewood and burn practice speech. I have actually witnessed a few people become wood burners again by having some of the conversations.

Oddly enough, with how regulation heavy Europe is, I spent a good portion of time overseas two years ago and I was amazed to see the amount of low tech wood stoves and open fire places in use through the Netherlands, Germany and Italy. Makes a guy wonder....

It only takes one bad egg.

So here is my challenge to everyone reading this, be an ambassador and have positive conversations with people about the industry and contact your representative whether Democrat or Republican about upcoming regulations. Have some talking points about lessing dependance on foreign oil, saving money on home heating costs, being carbon neutral, having affordable options for solid fuel appliances ect.

One side note, I think the cat stoves and hybrids are the only ones that will pass these tight regs.

Bingo! Right on the money, Scott. We all want clean air, who doesn't? But the Gov't can't put an entire industry in the crosshairs when they are the ones wanting us to burn less fossil fuels in the first place. Wood burning is carbon neutral. Particulate emissions from modern wood stoves are way down from what they were 30 years ago. It's hard to see any smoke coming out chimneys anymore because of secondary burn stoves.

Many jobs will potentially be lost in the wood stove industry, and many consumers will find it hard to pay higher prices to upgrade, or convert to burning wood. Outdoor furnaces are a problem in some areas, but the Gov't is going to wind up hurting others in the process of regulating clean air standards for anything that burns wood. Plus, those that cannot afford to pay for oil or propane will have to keep their old stoves running, or go broke trying to replace theirs when it breaks down. Too much of a burden is being put on one group (us wood burners) to satisfy the empty cans that are rattling for regulation. IMHO.

I've got to ask... what is the deal with the chainsaw and Chuck Norris? Also the constitution was written in 1787, not 1792.

Chuck Norris? If you've got to ask you'll never get it.

The first ten amendments were not ratified until December 1791, so Since I like those rights I'll stick with the 1792 copyright.

Never even heard of it, guess that's why I was confused... I just realized it was in a "sig" too, for some reason I thought it was part of the post.
