:) Well I have been working for almost six months at buying a piece of property. We have been considering buying something for several years now but were waiting until we had the funds saved up and the right piece of property came along. We were considering something up in the Adirondacks, not too far from our home. Hopefully within an hour or hour and a half drive. Looking for a place we would build a retirement home in the future. Looking for a place w could get away to now with the family, and eventually build our cabin in the woods in the future.

Well I did not want to say anything until it was done and over. And now it is. We closed today. We ended up buying 81 acres of land with timber on it. The timber is not the best, mostly White Pine (probably 80%), then next would be White Ash (probably 15-17%), and then a very little of some other hard woods. But it is a very pretty woods and will provide us with plenty of firewood for our lifetime and then some. We will leave most of it wild and fix up the current trail that is on it and then open several more trails in the future. It will be a lot of work, but I love doing that type of work.

The best part about it is we did not have to go very far. We purchased the property from my parents that surrounds our current home. So it is about a 100 yard drive from our house to our new camp back in the woods. LOL. The property surrounds our house and my immediate neighbor. They, my neighbor, and us are basically in the middle of the property along the road.

I never, ever would have thought this would happen. I am having one or two to celebrate! :drunk:

First is a picture from long ago when my little buddy and I were out walking on the main trail. He is much bigger than that now! LOL

Second is a shot of the camp from the bottom of the hill when I was hauling some wood up that slippery slope. The snow on top was granular, and on bottom was packed down just right into ice, so that my four wheel drive tractor could not get up it. The Toyota filled right up did it no problem though.

I still can't believe it is done though. My mother was going to lunch with my sister so my father and I went out to lunch together today when it was over. It has been a great day! :)

Congrats, my man! I'm very jealous of you! I dream of someday being able to buy even just a handful of acres on the mountain for a small camp.....someday....

I'm glad for you. Sounds like a whole new chapter is opening up in your life. Fantastic! Maybe a FHC GTG in the future at Gassy's Woods!!

I may need some serious help though if all the Ash get killed by the EAB. I have a bad feeling that is going to happen. Plenty of firewood for the future!

Congratulations Gasifier. The last I talked with the DEC, they said the EAB would come from Canada in our area.

What will you do with all those Pine needles!

Probably the same thing you are doing! I have a lot of good places for them. There are problem areas that are too soft for needles though. I am going to have to pile branches and dead trees, which I have a lot of, and then rent a chipper for the weekend and blow wood chips into a lot of these areas on the trail. That will give us a better, stronger support for walking on and driving the tractor on. I think anyway. What do you think woodlands? Have you chipped anything and used it on the trails? Or seen that done anywhere. I am thinking wood chips should give a pretty strong base, especially if put on several inches thick.

Those problem areas I speak of would be the low areas. Some of these areas you have to be real careful in. The mud becomes just like grease. And you can lose your truck or machine quickly. Ask me how I know.:emb:

I've done some chips but not on any deep holes, keep your eyes open for the companies that trim around the power lines then chip it up, they might be willing to dump you a load of chips for free.

I did dig out some wood from one part of the trail that was put in by a guy to build it up, (it sucked) I did load it up with pine needles, it's like riding over a pillow.

I have sections of the trail that are to wet. I will put culverts in certain areas and try to drain with some ditching, but you can't do that everywhere. Do you think wood chips might not be a good idea? I was thinking if I filled in some of the low areas that it might give us a good base. Then maybe pine needles on top. I don't know. Just thinking out loud.

Congrats Gas.... That's a dream come true for sure. Wish you many happy years in your future cabin/camp!!

We have several hundred acres in Kentucky (my Father and I). It has been paid for now for a few yrs. We bought it years ago (328 acres + or -) and it was only $33,000!!! It's now worth much more. That is where I plan to build and settle. . Plus, you can use a real gun to hunt Deer in Ky. Not like Ohio...

    Congrats again.
