Just file this one in your worthless piece of trivia file: In Arkansas, a bonfire at a 19-member family gathering led to 18 confirmed or probable cases of histoplasmosis. Guests roasted hotdogs over a bonfire fueled by bamboo in which red-winged blackbirds had been roosting. (Bird feces is a known source of Histoplasma capsulatum.) The implications? "Clinicians should be aware that exposure to a bonfire of bamboo in which birds have previously roosted might be a risk factor to consider when questioning patients with signs and symptoms of histoplasmosis." Histoplasmosis is an infection caused by breathing in spores of a fungus often found in bird and bat droppings. Now you know. Impress the guys at the pub tonight with your newfound knowledge.
It does make you think.....I see all sorts of poop on my firewood. I make sure to wash my hands after loading my stove.
I train all my birds to poop over at my neighbors… not on my firewood… Oh yeah… don't EVEN get me going about bats… … they're untrainable
Kinda scary thinking about it. I have some ducks and chickens and the info I'm finding is that can live in their poop too. When I clean out the coop I never gave any thought to a mask or suit or anything like that.
