Well, if it was over 20" on the butt it was probably 16" at 10' The 1st 10' log would have 100 bd ft in it. Can't say for sure without seeing log but from pic I'd say its least worth $3/bd ft. So Just the first 10' is worth $300. Expensive firewood. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

I had a huge Maple fall over. Being conservative I would say the base was 3ft with a very long and straight trunk. It was sitting near the top of the hill (BIG hills) laying downward on the hillside and I could only get so much. It's actually still rooted and alive last I saw back in April, when I was still able to walk up to it. Long story short, I heard from a friend that some guy was interested in trees, maple specifically. I met him, walked up...I walked, he barely made it, and took a look and wasn't interested. There was plenty of board feet there, and with a skidder, it would have been no problem for him. It's just not worth bringing out machinery and spending a good part of their day for one tree, even if they're interested in that particular species. So I'm going to tempt fate and get the rest of it this winter and try not to think about 3ft rounds rolling me over on their way downhill.
Ditto moparguy. My access road to the tree is wide enough for my 2025. Whoever would need a dozer to make the road wider. Would it be nice to make some money on this tree? Absolutely!! Hell I have a mill 3 miles down the road. Wouldn't want to bother asking him. Then, my pile for next year wouldn't be as big! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
I'm weird and would much rather have the big pile of wood over the few hundred bucks. Basically this guy waited until he got to my place and scouted the woods along the walk up to ask if I would be interested in letting him take other trees along with the big maple. I appreciate the trees too much to let them go... unless it's tree of heaven...but nobody wants that.

Love to burn hard maple! Maple dries fast and burns good! I've cut them in the spring and burned that winter!
I hate to see nice straight clean maple logs, especially one that big, turned into firewood, but there's no advantage to putting effort into milling it unless you have the equipment yourself to process it. Move the log, get it on the mill, etc. Most portable mills can't handle >25" diameter without a lot of extra work.
