Another thread got me to thinking. Knowing this is almost the middle of August and the normal temperatures are already dropping, albeit very slowly now, I got to looking at the averages. In August here we lose 3 degrees for the month. In September we lose 12 degrees for the month. In October we lose another 12 degrees. In November we lose 14 degrees. In December we lose 9 degrees. In January we dig snow. So beware, it won't be too long now before that stove gets used again.
You dig it? I thought that far out in the US Snow does two things: it blows and then blows away being like fine champagne bubbles. Second: it piles and ices. Locals go "we ski on that until July"
Im starting to look forward to the burning season as well. We can often get our first frost by the end of August but Im pleased when it waits another couple of weeks so I can keep growing my garden. August evenings start cooling off a bit more than July and my wife really picks up on that saying its the best summer month of the year because of the cooler nights. No air conditioning needed here! We just put a fan in the window.
Thanks for the reminder, but the schedule is for the L.P. right? You remember those days up here, right?
I'm two cords shy for the winter still! I'm holding out to find someone local either cheap, or moving and giving away cords. If not, I burn what I can
I love running my stove but I can wait a bit. I do want to get another tree stand up soon, there's that !!!
All stocked up and ready to go if I hafta...not quite feelin it yet...'nother couple months I'll be ready to far up...gotta have a feel cool days/nights to get me in the mood. I did notice my Poplar trees are starting to drop a few leaves when I mowed the yard tonight. Also seen a Maple or two dropping a few...those trees are probably stressed though.
Looking forward to heating season this year since I am at least 2 years ahead. Several times when I went out the back door, I thought I going to start to bring the wood up closer to the house. It is still to early to start that. I've also been looking at the log pile. Since it is getting cooler now, I'm itching to get back at it.
Im seeing that as well. Weve had a very hot, almost no rain summer so far. We start seeing the leaves turning colour soon but it does seem a smidge early here to see them turning now. Its 7c/44f and we had a full hour of rain which is nice considering how much of BC is burning right now.
I hear that! I dont do well in the heat, so its always on in my house. It was so nice in last weeks cooldown to have it turned off for 5 days straight! My wife and I really enjoy all of the fall festivals and fairs too, we had been to too many over the past few years as it was easier to go without than take the infant/toddler
In addition to the dropping temps., we're really starting to notice the shortening days. Also, August is the quiet month, by that I mean there are no birds singing in the morning anymore. No need for them to find mates and defend breeding territory, they are now building strength for the long journey soon to happen.
Good point about the birds. There are very few singing this morning, but they would be almost deafening the last 3 months.
Well, there is an exception to this. Those damm crows! Just as close to daybreak as they can get, they start their dang screaming! Been more than one morning I've been patrolling the cottage area with a slingshot or the air rifle! Course, you can't really call that singing anyway...no wonder why there is never a closed season on them!
