Not exactly a career change but a lil different. I have an interview Monday morning at the local John Deere dealer. They are looking for a lawn and garden service technician. Not getting my hopes too high, but worth checking into...

Had a successful career as an office machine repairman, until computers made me a dinosaur. Currently working for Homeland Security. After I retire, may grow hops or help the wife with bed-bug sniffing K-9's. Or may just end up scrounging wood all day. Who knows, may become a Wal-Mart Greeter (snazzy vests)!

Are you serious about the K9s? How does that work?

Yeah, there are actually dogs trained to find bed-bugs. It costs about $300 per room. The wife just had it done for an elderly housing location she works for. There are also dogs that are trained for mold, peanut allergies and cancer.
We are seriously looking into this right now.

That's the way I'm leaning. I've been climbing trees for 32 years. I'll probably keep doing it as long as my body allows but I know it won't last forever. For the last 5 years I've been doing large scale gardening; about 10,000sf, just to get an introduction to how much work it really is.

I don't know Uncle Joe, but 10K sqf sounds like farming to me. All crops for yourself?

I changed, retired from the military, retired from the Va, retired from the local hospital, now work per diem from home doing monitoring vital signs and symptoms. That is getting less and less. Sometimes less than 8 hrs a month. My career now is trying to figure out how I am ever going to get my "round to its" done in retirement. Just don't seem to have enough hrs in the day! My best move was getting away from being a supervisor. That can eat you up.

My inbox is open for anything you want to ask. I've been out of a dealership for six years now but the product line hasn't changed much yet.

My main concern is wages. Auto Tech vs. L&G Tech? I have a bad feeling I'm better off where I am...

It depends. A dealership with a high production shop and one that runs a lot of compact tractors through the shop can pay ok. If it's strictly lawn tractors and the like, then pay is likely to be pretty low.

IDK what you make now but I have a feeling you're right about the $$. It's a big part of the reason that I cannot return to that field as anything other than a business owner.

Ever consider starting your own business? Sounds like MM preferred that route. Around here if you know what you are doing and are honest in all your dealings you have no trouble staying busy. Two problems I see with owner/operator businesses that don't make it - they either charge too much while they are still perfecting their craft or charge too little when they are really good. People will pay well for someone who gets it right the first time with attention to detail but don't like your training to be at their expense.

Amen brother Savage. I reached that re-tired point several years ago and am now working on education to qualify me for my next career, which will be hibernator (if the boss will allow).

It seems like a lot but 3000 of that is sweet corn. 2000 is for wheat(treats for the chickens) and 1000 for blackberries and blueberries. So you have 6000 that doesn't require constant attention.
Yes. Most of it is for our own use. We give some away but mostly it's used fresh, canned, dried or frozen. We like knowing where our food comes from. Food alerts and recalls don't bother us much unless its milk. Planning on some goats in the future for that, but they require a lot of sturdy fencing and good fencing is big $$$.
