I was starting to think about the upcoming heating season and making some fire starters. We do a lot of starts and go through quite a few of these. I've been making the paper towel tube starters that are a pain to fill.

Today I heated up a few candles in an old pan on the electric grill. I tossed in a red one too.

I added a bunch of lathe curls and saw dust.

I dumped the batch onto a piece of broken plastic sled. I used a small pan lid and packed it tight and let it cool.
The plastic sled is flexible and the whole thing popped right off. This is about 14" across and 1 1/2" thick.

I broke it into about 40 or 50 pieces and the edges are nice and rough and should take the lighter flame well. Some of these I broke in half. One more batch and I should be good for the bulk of the winter. Under an hour of work start to finish.

I love threads like this one! I know I've told the story before many times, but it reminds me of the fire starters we used to make up at hunting camp before my buddy J.D. passed away. There's still a few of the ones he made left......

TP tubes and paper towel tubes work perty gooder without anything added. Can fold 2-3 other tubes and slide em inside one. That type of cardboard burns really well.

The tube ones are great. I made a plunger with a 3/4" pvc pipe section and epoxied a small plastic cap to compress the tube. I think a funnel would make it easier next time to fill 'em.

How about egg cartons? Just stay away from egglands best (styrofoam). Paper type ones will work .

That's been done before too, and they look like they worked great.

As for me, I just save all the straight sections of arborvitae (cedar) I cut, and split it into slivers.

I have huge boxes of that stuff in the loft of my shop and it's the best kindling ever, IMO....

I took a cue from Larry (savemoney ) this year and got a bunch of those little mini-muffin papers and pan and been makin' up FSs to beat the band.
The local store no longer has the cardboard egg cartons. :headbang: I hadda switch gears and take the fork in the road when I got to it. They seem to be slightly smaller, but should work well. I'm keepin' my fingers crossed.

I have a box of that too, but I'm wondering what's the thriftiest way to use it...seems a waste to use a big chunk on one fire. IMG_20170812_7198.jpg

I think BrianK used the waxed paper cups like you would use in the bathroom for brushing your teeth

I read the last page of posts in the classified section for SC discount. Thomas's post said to try "save" which worked. Down further they mentioned "holiday40" I tried that first and it did not work. I bought some of the FHC branded super cedars last time but I wanted a big box this time.

Take a hatchet and make slivers out of it.

I'll sit down in my garage and make a whole batch of it up at a time while drinking a few brews (but not enough to make me careless with that hatchet!!)
