Been lurking for awhile, and have learned so much! Before FHC I just scrambled to accumulate enough sorta-dry wood to get through most of the winter, running out in March, and resorting to wood bricks util May. You people have inspired me to step up my game! Anyway, I answered a Craigslist ad in Lowell, MA today that turned out great. The homeowner was a Lowell police officer, and he even helped me load my car. He had a huge red oak all sectioned up in his backyard, cut about a year and a half ago. He said the tree service charged him $3500 to take it down, and broke 4 chains on the metal inside. He decided to give away the wood instead of letting them take it. He had never seen anyone split with wedges before, and that really impressed him, although it's kind of a parlour trick on oak rounds that thin. And he said I can come back anytime for the rest of it. I'm hoping none of the other Craigslist vultures bring their wedges! Pics are of the pile, the stump, my loaded car, and my haul sunbathing by the pool.

Homeowner already deleted his Craigslist offer, so I guess he has enough takers. I'll be back tomorrow afternoon, I'm betting only the smaller stuff got taken.
Smaller stuff is gone well, the smaller stuff that's any good at least. I brought my wedges, but didn't feel the desire to kill myself splitting too. There's definitely plenty of giant cookies left though! I just wish they didn't cut them so thin.

They are thin, but at least with two flat sides they'll stack nice. Maybe with all that end grain they will dry quicker. I was shocked how wet they were, gushed liquid around my wedge. Thanks for leaving me some!
The smaller stuff felt really light. I was hopefull that it would be close, but I split two pieces when I got home, and they read 26 & 30% moisture still. Oh well, I ended up taking 3/4 of a load before I was gassed. since it's too wet for this winter, it will go in the waiting for cold weather for splitting pile. Have fun tomorrow!

No, I didnt get there until almost 5:00. Those guys likely got the best wood! I have a Bronco, I can fit a bit more than. 1/3 of a cord if I pack it tight. But the homeowners estimate of the wood being 20' from the driveway was just a little bit off lol. I hand carried it all.
Nope! That was the oak in some guys back yard 5 mins from my house. I could pull my truck right to the edge of the lawn and throw the wood right to the truck from where I cut it for loading.
Sweet! I may have driven by your house, long stacks parallel to your house on the left side? I don't remember what road, I was following GPS to the place in Ipswich with the cut up oak pallets. Ever make it there?
No, but I've seen that on CL. When I need pallets I have enough local access to them. If you were driving by my house on your way to Ipswich, you need a new GPS. I live on a private dead end on Little Island Pond.

They were cut up into crosses, all oak, but I killed my back for a couple days pulling them apart (twisty nails!). Well if it wasn't your place, there's definitely another serious hoarder in Pelham. Maybe we'll cross paths sometime at a score. I've never chopped down a tree, get most of my wood at the dump, and some off Craigslist now and then.
If you need pallets, there's always a bunch outside the buildings where my office is in Nashua. We're on Celina Ave. I cut em up with a cordless circular saw and toss em in rubermade tubs
