I read a post the other day by Fulltang , something about how to cut up humans ? Anyhow it go me thinking about a cutting crib especially since I've got at least 3 cord worth of 2-4" poles of ash in all sorts of lengths and what a pia to do that all one at a time. Here's the start of it, been trying for three days to get to the lumber yard, but of course work gets in the way. Today I got the chance to stop. Just 2x4 pressure treated stuff and one 2x8 that I haven't got put in yet. I've got it laid out to fit with my 24" bar 372 and should be able to cut 4 pieces to length and trim off the end to reload or stack. I'm going to screw a plywood end cap on the right for a bump stop and if you look close between the uprights you can see the pencil marks where I'm going to stick the 2x8 pieces that will sit up even with the other 2x4 the logs will rest on and the space between will be the cut slot. We shall see hope to finish it up and try it out this weekend
I've been thinking about it for a while myself even half built a cross buck style one that didn't work out the way I thought and ended up as a staging table for feeding the splitter which works great anyway.
Lego'd in case anyone's wife (I'm lookin' at you TurboDiesel ) or kids are looking over their shoulder. Not sure what you fellas are messing around with cribs for. Don't the people usually just wiggle out of there? Nothing like a good hatchet and wood chipper for the job!
Talk to Fulltang he started it! I'm going use mine for farwood production! If I ever get a chance to be home and finish it! By the way I needed a good laugh that video was classic!
Finished it up this morning just got to wait until the wife is up now to run the saw. Although I put my little 41 back together this morning and tuned it in the garage at 615
This is the way to do it for the lighter poles! I have this style (I call it an H-buck) and I also have the Shawn Curry super duper traditional crossbuck. You can make a lot of firewood and sawdust in minimal cutting time!
Just threw the logs in on the first run no particular order I think from now on longest on the bottom will be most efficient but all I've got to say is YAHTZEE! Why didn't I build this sooner?!:stacke::stacke::stacke: Partially unloaded... Two heaped wheelbarrow loads off the loosely stacked crib from the earlier pictures. If I pay attention to stacking the poles I bet I get three wheelbarrows easy! It's even nice to use the marks on it to check some of the odd length rounds and tell me to the split pile or send them to the trim box. The trim box which is actually my 3pt. Hitch carrier with a bump stop 2x6 and a piece of 1x pine for length guide. I'll load it up and run the saw across the end to trim to firewood length.
I was thinking about this and it would seem that using a FEL on the tractor to load the jig would be the best way to go. I will no doubt be trying this out.
If you've got some forks and build the uprights accordingly you can set a whole load right down in!!:stacke: Even make some fork pockets to pick up the whole rig with the cut pieces on it And be able to take it and dump it or move it to the splitter! You almost wouldn't have to even handle the wood!
