I truly enjoy cutting, skidding, and blocking wood. I clear cut a nacre of woods right next to my house, pulled three big trailers of ash ligs from a friends place, and have neighbors dropping trees for me. I have logs piling up, in 4 piles and have skid in piles of 8-10 inch tops. Luckily i have machinery, but I am getting buried. I burnt a lot more last year than years prior, but have this year and next easily covered. How much is too much?????
Sounds like a great problem to have! It seems that the predominant school of thought is to have a 3 year supply, which ensures that you're getting the maximum heat output from your wood.
I think we need to establish a terminology baseline, such as: One year supply CSS- covered. Two year supply- covered & backed up. Three year supply- supply hoard. Wood stacked so deep you walk through a maze to get to the backyard- just about right. You just rented a self storage building to hold your overflowing wood stash- over-hoarded.
Timely thread...Saturday I received a letter from the township zoning department "suggesting" that I may be encroaching upon or already dangerously close to the property line with my firewood "hoard" (my word not theirs). The crisp white letter stated how understanding they were about the close quarters of the homes or summer cottages on my street but suggested it best I became aware of my "eye sore" (again my neighbor's word not mine). Let's back up...my neighbor surveyed the line, this spring I moved my woodshed and a row of stacks to my side and I drew her attention to said move. Word has filtered to me that the "work station" I've created in my driveway is actually the issue. I've been slowly moving it to the back yard. There are several roads to take here.... since I'm on my property I've decided no response and slowly moving the wood to the backyard is the answer...live and let live!
They got a thread on here that gives you a title to how many cord you have. But sometimes its hard to put an exact number to it if its a hodgepodge thing. Me: Ive got a lot of irregularities so its hard to round up. But Im gonna look for the thread for ya.. On the too much side, Im not getting complaints from my neighbors, they actually don't mind it but I feel that others have taken notice and wonder my intentions. However this is a genuine concern what I am about to say next. Most summers in WA are just really dry so the danger for fire is high. So Im still worried about my stacks catching fire to some dumbazz with a cigarette. So its still a concern when Im also in a residential area. But I'll just likely keep my stacks under control at this point.
Atleast 3 yrs worth spit and ranked. Possibly another year just bucked up on a pile Sent from my SM-G900V using Tapatalk
If you have the room take it, once my stacking areas are full then I stop. I did tell the wife that I wanted another area for stacking so that's on the list.
I'd say it's too much if it starts to rot before you get to burn it 3 year plan is working great for me.
I am back on the 3 year plan, which is 10 cords. I just have too much to cut, with not enough time. I start with trees standing, not logs, so I am buried in tops.
This year and next covered you don't have too much for sure. As for the log piles, that all depends upon how much there are and how long it will take to buck them up. But I've seen logs in a pile left uncovered for 6-8 years and very little rot in only a few logs. Naturally that depends upon the wood and the climate too but the wood I'm speaking of was in Upper Michigan where it is typically cool and wet with deep snow in winter. Get the wood bucked and top covered and it will keep for years and years and years.
Of course most know that this is only one small benefit of being on the 3 year plan. There are many more!
Boy oh boy am I ever happy that I live where I do. Don't have to worry about such crap. Isn't it amazing how so many are so quick to point out what they don't like about how you live?!
I am with you Savage on this one. Most people around here who see my stacks think they are neat looking. The Tax Assessor was just out and all he wanted to do was talk about my wood stacks and how to properly heat with wood and where do I get my wood. Different mind set out in the ranch and farm lands.
Thank God I live out in the woods. I couldn't take no condo commandos, or HOA's and neighborhood watch, nosey neighbors etc. I really don't see how firewood and splitting wood effects the neighbors. Sorry OP for hijacking your thread. I don't know the answer to your question. I burn outside bonfires frequent. I can't ever seem to get enough let alone too much..... I agree with TurboDiesel ,there's no such thing as over hoarding wood! Keep on cuttin' ,splittin' an stacking!:stacke::stacke: That's where all the fun is!
The bigger one is around 40 inches...I wanted to mill it...don't know if I'll have time to get it before it's gone... It's not wood availability it's time.
