There is lots of "you know you live is a small town when" stories out there. Our son-in-law talks about the time he went to the post office here in town and the post office staff gave him a hint for a Christmas present for his MIL.
You know you in live in small town when you go to the local store and you're short on money. They write down what you owe on a piece of paper and you pay them later.
I recently stepped forward at a sub shop in Portsmouth, (NH) and picked up the tab for a young man and a young girl in uniform about to pay. I don't know if they were ROTC or Nat'l Guard, or regular duty, but they seemed somewhat embarassed that I offered to pick up their tab. They kinda had that look like we just joined and we haven't done anything yet. I assured them that the fact they joined warranted my, and our appreciation.
It is amazing how many times I've gone to town to get something then when going to pay for it find I have no wallet with me. Tis okay though. Just take it home and let wife pay for it next time she is in town!
