Doesn't seem like they have anything to gain by feeding you a line of BS.

    I really hope you're right!!
I've been trying to get this for 5 weeks. After 2 weeks some one said they have it I heard it start up on phone.
Jumped in the car and when I got there 40 min later was told it was a mistake and they rented the wrong one by mistake.
The next day when I called was told by a different person who said he was looking at rental contract that it wasn't back yet and they rented it the day before at 5:00. Trouble was that I was there to get it at 3:00 and it was on rental

There's some conspiracy going on here. Could be the saw is in Switzerland wielded by the psycho carving up an insurance company. HD doesn't want that data out there.

dougand3 I don't know about that. But it's not a straightforward transaction at all.

mikeward take the time and send an email to Home Depot and explain what is going on...I can almost guarantee they will send you a $50.00 gift card for your troubles. Don't know if it will get you the saw, but something is better than nothing.

Offer to buy it as is (lowball offer) and then rebuild it with the big bore kit!

Yes, something's fishy, but I'd do as brenndatomu said and just say I know it's got a bad top end, and offer a low-ball to just buy it as it's. Then big bore time.

This is exactly what I was thinking as long as its just the top end.
Problem, I have never done this before and would have a little learning to do
I've seen top ends for sale for between $100-$200 closer to 100.
But I never split a tractor before to put in a clutch and that worked out well.
I'm assuming this would be simpler as long as the rest of the saw is ok
    Will call again tomorrow morning

It's easy to replace the piston and cylinder on a saw. If it's just top end, then it's simple. Even if the crank was needing repair, that's still pretty easy.

If it's just low on compression, then a top end will cure it. Heck, a simple re ring might do it. But since you're in there.....

Maybe an employee wants it...if so, I would think it would be easier to just say "sold" though...weird

I think you're on the right track. If it was straight gassed- lowball offer, save them the headache. You'll be doing them a favor and helping to save the environment 'cause they don't have to junk it. Let me know if that approach works. ;)

I will post my $.02 on the HD rental saws as I've posted in a previous thread....like others have said, the 6401/6421 is a nice saw, I know a lot of people have had good luck with the Home Depot ex-rental saws, I have not had that same luck. I have bought two of them, the first one let go of the big end rod bearing on the first tank of fuel, the second one had a clutch side crank bearing failure on the third tank of fuel. That was enough to turn me away from them, you may buy one and run it for 100 years, no way to know. I just understand how most people take care of things that don't belong to them. For instance, when is the last time you saw someone check oil, coolant, trans fluid, or tire pressure in a rental car?

A lot of guys seem to like the idea that you can buy a $300 saw from Home Depot and make it a larger saw by just buying a $100 top end kit, in my opinion, I would still prefer the Stihl or Husky counterpart. I really like the 5100 Dolmar, and the 9010 as well, everything in between, I have just not been overly impressed with. I think for the $400 you'll have in that saw, there are better options. There are lots of $400 range saws out there that will hand a 80cc Dolly its azz on a silver platter. Not trying to discourage you from buying the saw, I'm just saying that for $300 there are better used 60cc options and for $400 there are better used 80cc options. Again, that is my opinion, do with it as you wish.

    Good thoughts and I agree.
Except for the part about an 80cc Dolmar having it's azz handed to it. You'd have to be more specific for that one.

For $400 used, I've got plenty of flat top 066 Stihls that are within a pound weight wise, and a 80cc Dolly won't even come close. 390xp as well... Not to mention dealer support for the Dolkita saws is essentially non-existent in some areas. I'm not a Dolkita hater by any means, like I said, I like the 5100/9100 class saws just fine. I own those as well. I've ran the 6421 with and without the big bore kits. They are good saws, they aren't anything to write home about.

No problem, I'll give that a 066 is going to be a beefier saw than an improved 6421 is. Maybe even an 7901, don't know, haven't run them side-by-side personally.
So, in Mike's area, searching CL, for a comparable price- do you think he'd find a better deal than the HD 6421?
edit- It might save him some grief if someone found a better saw, for a better price. Or had a spare they'd be willing to sell that would work for him.
