Finally got half of one of the three remaining beech tees my neighbor dropped. Hope to get rest out tomorrow. Worked till dark. Ms461 with 20 inch bar to put size into perspective

That is some nice beech! Good for you getting it. This is an interesting piece the way it grew below that crotch. Will make for some messy splitting but will burn nicely anyway.
My beech seems to die before it gets that big and I don't know why, we must be beech unfriendly around here!
That got me thinking, I never even thought about what the natural range of Beech is. It's always been around these parts in the northeast, kinda taken for granted. Kind of the overlooked firewood, we always talk about Oak, Locust, Ash Cherry, etc. I'm assuming it's a northern tree. I'm going to look up it's range. Educate myself I will.
My soil is heavy, wet clay I wonder if that's a factor. I see some trees fall over, it looks like the roots stay up towards the ground and can't hold the tree good.
These are in a relatively mature hardwood forest, very hilly. Clay soil and glacial till. My neighbor has probably 20 more this size standing that he wants removed. I hope to clean up the othe two soon, and get a few more on the ground for spring.

They grow here really well in wet clay, next to or in swamps.... at least here. I'm thinking beech bark disease. I don't cut down much beech just because of it even though there is oodles of it effected... I especially leave the resistant ones alone. Just like elm or the butternut canker but not as bad.
It's a strange range in MI with beech in most of the state. Yet in the UP, it basically does not grow west of the Escanaba river except in Menominee county and a little bit in Delta.
