With March coming in like it was January, I am starting to wonder if we will have enough wood in this year's pile. I mean seriously, highs forecasted for the first few days of March as below zero.
Thats a bummer for sure . I think we will be close . I keep saying in my head ..." gotta keep the furnace off ...... gotta keep the furnace off ! "
Grizz, I'm seeing people up this way that always have wood left after the heating season getting greenwood to burn, it's been a cold winter here in Northern New York.
We still have plenty, thank the Lord. As for March, many times I've seen the first half of March be the worst part of winter. Perhaps this year will be the same.
I'll just barely get through. I have on occasion this year, pull from next year's oak, which was fine. But I'm sure once spring his, everyone of us will have some work to do. Burn the maple, it's fine! Be well
Sitting good so far still have a cord + of hickory,Oak, and SugarMaple mixed+ small amount of Paper birch (3'x4' stack) sitting outside Full cord inside same mix so should be good until the end of April Current temp here about Zero + wind chill puts somewhere in -15 to-30 area . Talking about a new possible record low for a High temp today not seen since the 1800's. Stopped by my friends place last night comment about very high utility bill ( they are just ambiance burners ) I didn't ask how high but educated guess would be high 300's low $400's combined Ng and Elec. Vs my $130 for last 30 days which is a good 20% higher than last year, but I will modify that by saying that I have the ng up a couple notches over last year( so I don't freeze a water line) and been plugging the truck in over night because of the temps ( that puts a real jump on the electric).
Sure is looking that way for this year, we have snow, ice , wintry mix, and 0 degree temps forecasted........
Thankful the cord of wood I have allotted for the rest of Winter is all Locust and Mulberry. Cold today and more snow coming Sunday
I'm sitting A OK.... Used a lot more tag I had figured. But more winter & bigger stove will do that.... I'll just start cutting, splitting, and stacking more....
Here in SW PA, the forecast is for about another week of cold weather before it breaks into temps that look like shoulder season. I have just enough kinda-dry wood left to make it through that. Fortunately I help run a university woodshop, and the students turn out a steady supply of kiln-dried scrap that will be perfect for the milder weather we're being promised. For me as a city dweller, it can be a little hard to relate to those out in the countryside without natural gas service. My worst case scenario is that the furnace kicks on a little more often, which is merely disappointing; I won't freeze or be bankrupted by high oil/propane/electric bills. My house is a little too big and a little too poorly insulated for my 2 cubic foot stove to quite keep up, so I'm acclimated to a modest monthly heating bill anyhow. Happily my wood supply is (or was) much drier this time around, and I used less gas in late January / early February than in the same period last year, despite the much lower temperatures.
I'm not sure on the storm totals for our area but tonight with the windchill it will be -29. That calls for both the Liberty and the Pellet Stove to be running.
Comparing this winter to 2011/12 which was warm and very short of snow, it's no wonder the wood supply looks questionable. After 11/12, about 3/4 cord went unused and got put back in the stacks. Not so this year.
I have dead standing pine I could easily harvest and use long before trying to burn marginal or green wood. I also have a thermostat connected to a oil fired furnace I could turn up from 58.
